Question Moving To Gillette-Need Advice,Please

Hi Wyomingites!

Our names are Mike and Patti. We live in Chester,SC, and we're moving to Gillette in the spring of 2007. We are looking for decent people,a decent town, and decent jobs. We're over-the-road drivers, but we're just plain ol' tired of the BS that goes with our job. Gillette has always appealed to us,so we did some snooping, and we've decided to come and live with you.We are honest,friendly,hard-working people, and we're looking for good friends,a nice home(maybe with a little land),good jobs, and a good life, because we're going to put down our roots and STAY. We're older people(him-51,her-44),so we aren't interested in a "Party Town" type of thing. We don't have any children,we don't use drugs, and we only drink on rare occasions. We know the meaning of courtesy, manners, respect, and responsiblity, and we do not have any stupid "Big City Ideas". We're looking for temporary housing until we can become familiar with Gillette, get established on our jobs(we'll be going to work when we arrive),get a few paychecks under our belts, and find our permanent home. We have a fully furnished 3 bdrm home here in SC, but we want to find our permanent home before we pack up ALL of our junk and move it, because we're only going to do it ONCE! We're willing to look at a (furnished) small house,a mobile home,an apartment,or even a large camper. We can bring our own dishes, cooking utensils, towels, bedding, some small appliances, and a TV. We do have 2 medium-sized dogs that we can not leave behind, because we have nobody to care for them. One is a 3 yr. old Border Collie/Jack Russell mix(Sable-female-24 lbs),the other is a 1 yr.old Keeshond(Smokey-male-35 lbs). They are house-broken,well-trained,all shots,spayed/neutered,friendly, and very clean. They ride with us in the truck, so we have to keep them clean, free of fleas/ticks, have current shots, and we can't allow them to tear things up,because our boss would have a fit(we have permission to take them with us).We will take full responsibility for them, and we're willing to pay a reasonable deposit for them.Smokey is smart, playful, and loves children, but he can get a little rowdy when he's excited. Sable is kind of shy,and prefers older kids and adults, but she is also smart and playful. We will keep your property clean(home AND yard),report any serious problems promptly, and PAY OUR RENT. We won't bug you over small things -like a broken light bulb-we'll take care of it ourselves. We'll be friendly to any neighbors, and nobody will have to call the police because of us. We are planning to rent for 1-2 years, so you will have good tenants. If you have a place you would be willing to rent to us, please leave us a message on this forum, and we can make arrangements to contact you. Any advice, information, or just a friendly "Hi,Goofy!!" would be most welcome also. We're looking forward to hearing from you all!

I can't help you with a place in Gillette, but have you looked at Lusk? It's very cute and there are some nice homes there, I think jobs might be more limited there, but it could be an easier place to settle into. Also look at renting in Midwest or Edgerton, that puts you about 40+ min. or so from Gillette and if you can handle more driving, you might have better luck finding something to live, and those towns are super small, but have a grocery store and a diner or two.

Thanks for the info. Do you know anything about Casper?? Midwest and Edgerton are closer to Casper. We don't mind being a little ways out of town, but Lusk is a bit further out than we'd like until we get familiar with the area. We were gonna research Casper also, and any info would help.

Edgerton to Hwy. 50 (Pine Tree Jct.) is 32 miles, and from there to Gillette it is 51 miles. So a total of 83 miles. You are not going to do it in 40 minutes without going 100 mph. I would suggest other towns besides Gillette would be Pine Haven near Keyhole reservoir, Moorcroft, Wright, or Upton. If you want to be in the center of boom activity, then I would suggest Buffalo, and maybe Kaycee. I call this as the "Square Boom " which you start at Gillette to Sheridan to Casper to Douglas and back to Gillette.

Housing is tight, but not impossible. Good Luck!

Default housing in Gillette

Try looking at the classifieds in the newspapers. Gillette is www.gillettenewsrecord.com, Casper is www.trib.com. There are lots of places to live in WY that are great. It is hard to find housing in Gillette right now because of the boom. Get a WY map and look at towns and where they are in relation to other towns, highways, etc.

I do not recommend moving to Casper, lived there for many, many years. It is very windy and quite depressing. I was born and raised there and still have lots of family that I visit a few times a year. I would not want to raise my kiddos there, but if I didn't have kids maybe it wouldn't be so bad. If I had to move back to WY, I would probably look in areas like Sheridan and Gillette

It is windy in most of WY. Gillette and Sheridan are both very different areas to live. It does depend on what you are looking for. To me Casper isn't depressing but everyone has their own opinion.

Crannsi, I agree with you personally that Casper is depressing (very) but it is also the unofficial 2nd capital of Wyoming and has the only newspaper one could call the Wyoming Newspaper. I never cared for Gillette either but it is a boomer and many folks like it for the same qualities I find unattractive. Just depends on personal preference. I like Alpine conditions. Others like the wide-open feel. I think since hapipup already likes Gillette that they're into the wide-open (is that right hp?). From experience, I don't think anybody from the Carolinas would have a hard time meeting friendly, helpful folks in Wyoming - after all, we don't adjust to anybody and everybody has to adjust to Wyoming! The dogs should not be a problem except in home-rental. We like dogs in Wyoming plus they help keep the coyotes away and Gillette is definitely "howl-at-the-moon" territory. I'm not sure I'd hang strongly onto that "moving in and staying put" strategy though - Wyoming has a lot of variety to offer and it'll take you a couple of years to soak it in. Buffalo is such a neat little town - glad to hear it's booming.
