Hi, I just posted in another thread here about possibly moving to Wheatland for work. Any suggestions on a place to rent for myself would be helpful, just not able to buy anything right away if the job works out!...thanks!

for a room for rent (as per other post), put a notice in the grocery, and churches, library, and senior center. If there is a local paper you can try that.
Often seniors are happy for extended guests, especially if you are handy around the house.

Thanks, Rabbit...I'll be coming from out of state and first time in Wyoming. I have a friend with a place in Riverton, so will look there and maybe Lander as well!...the job I'm looking into is in Wheatland, so a bit far of a commute from Riverton!!

I guess you could say I've done that commute (sort of), but not often. I have property outside of Wheatland, and drove down to Cheyenne a few days in a row last summer when I was there. I would say that you could do the commute for a season (as long as the season is summer), but you wouldn't want to keep doing it for long. In the summer, it's a beautiful drive, but it's a long one (nearly 80 miles), especially if you're tired. Other times of the year, the wind blows severely (100 mph+ along parts of I-25) quite often. When it snows, the wind and snow combined cause white-out conditions that are very difficult to drive in. There are some other threads on the Wyoming forum that discuss these harsh conditions. That isn't to say that you couldn't make the commute. You would just want to have the flexibility to stay home on the days when the weather is severe. According to others on the forum, every year there are several trucks that are blown over on the highway because of the wind. This usually seems to happen just a little bit south of Wheatland.

Here's a link to an ad for an apartment that was in the local paper:
Platte County Record Times Online
You can navigate the links at the top of the page to see what else the paper has to offer, though I didn't find any other rentals at this point.

The big difference between this drive and what is shown on Ice Road truckers is that most of the time, the road's actually dry. It's only when there's a storm, or until things thaw out afterward that it's that way on I-25 between Wheatland and Cheyenne. Those Ice Road Truckers are driving on ice on every trip, all winter long. The cost of living in Wyoming is definitely lower than it is in California, but local wages reflect that, too.
If you'll be working in Wheatland, you'll probably want to live closer than Cheyenne. Once you get out that way, you'll probably want to look around for rentals in or near Wheatland. Check the local real estate offices, and ask around in town, or look at bulletin boards (restaurants, Chamber of Commerce, grocrey store, etc.). If you happen to be there on a Sunday morning, you might want to attend one of the local churches, and ask the folks there if they know of any rentals. Sometimes word of mouth works better than advertising.

There is also the town of Chugwater which is about 25 miles south of Wheatland.
Its a little town of about 200, but its not as far as Cheyenne. The people that live there are really friendly. There might be a place to rent or buy in town. I spent a few days in Chugwater last May on a trip I took to Mount Rushmoore and enjoyed it. There are 3 churches in town so, you can ask around as the other person suggested.
Give it a try you never know what might come of it.

This is a good point. There isn't much of anything in Chugwater except a few homes, a gas station with a convenience store, a restaurant (maybe two?), a highway rest stop, and the aforementioned churches, but it is about 25 miles closer to Cheyenne than Wheatland is, for those times that you would need to go to Cheyenne. If you're commuting to Wheatland, you'd be a lot closer in Chugwater than in Cheyenne, but you'd have to do most of your shopping in one or the other of those places rather than Chugwater. Also, I think that you'd have more luck finding a rental in Wheatland than Chugwater just because of it's much larger size, but I could be wrong.
Other places you might want to check out that aren't all that far from Wheatland would be Fort Laramie, Guernsey, and Glendo. These are all within the same county (Platte), and are closer to Wheatland than Cheyenne is. Glendo has a lot of recreational properties around it, so it might be possible for you to rent one of them in the short term until you find something else.
