I am currently living in Lovington NM and very unhappy with the retirement move mistake, friends told me its nice in New Mexico and the weather is great for arthritis, it is but I miss my winter and fall. I'm currently living in a 62 and older housing campus and would be looking for the same in Sheridan.
Any info about the area from the locals would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Sheridan is a nice place, although you need to know that the winters can get a little fierce from time to time.

The retirement communities I remember there are more geared towards assisted living. You may be too young for that still. I believe one is called Sugarland Ridge, and another might be Green House Living. It'll depend on what kind of situation you're looking for... I know some seasoned citizens just want to be away from noisy young families but live in a traditional neighborhood setting, and if that's your case I don't know of any in Sheridan other than some 2 bedroom condos near the golf course.

I'm near Sheridan. I don't know of any adult-only communities.

I like it, but I hear others gripe that the shopping and restaurants are too limited. I haven't eaten out in more than two years, though I occasionally order a pizza for convenience. Shopping is a couple hours south to Casper or a couple hours north in Billings, MT where each has a mall and something of a downtown. Doable as day trips when the weather is good, but can be tough drives in the winter.

Sheridan has some specialists and a few more that travel in on a schedule. Otherwise, one has to travel to Billings, Casper, or even Rapid City, SD. That's okay with some people, others end up moving to be closer to broader medical services.

Veteran's Medical eligible? Sheridan is good for that service. (but has a quite high cost of living, compared to eastern NM)

Maybe you should look to SD. (Sturgis has some medical and is not too expensive. (yet))

If WY... consider Powell (similar weather and proximity to MT as Sheridan, but lower CoL.)

Also, while you are in the neighborhood... look to Northern NM and AZ for arthritis advantage + Winter and Fall.

Also Grand Junction / Delta Colorado and parts of UT (Logan)

Or find / call the Senior Center for more leads on what's available.

I received an application from a senior apartment in Sheridan, plenty of paperwork to fill out. I'm going to start saving the funds for a move and move myself as I have very little and would need the smallest truck U-Haul offers.

At least in Billings you get the advantage of no sales tax. You can always go to Costco and buy in bulk to stock up. As far as medical and dental if one chooses Sheridan not sure what areas are ideal or closest. Sheridan is very rural?
Winters in Sheridan = 4 wheel drive vehicle?

Sheridan isn't "very rural" by Wyoming standards. A two hour driving radius to larger markets for goods/services isn't unusual.

4 wheel drive vehicle not needed in the winters if you're staying on the main paved roads and highways of the area. Compared to much of Wyoming, the winters here are relatively mild.

Of course, storm fronts may move through the area and bring inclement weather to the area for a day or two. These are the times when if you don't have to be somewhere for work or an appointment, it's prudent to stay home and not be out on the roads … and that includes the folk with 4x4 vehicles. It doesn't take too much foresight to check the weather forecasts and be prepared for those times.

Thanks for the info. I won't be commuting but soon in retirement. Perhaps a front wheel drive car or AWD car will suffice? I know I will need to buy new vehicles but I'm not into trucks. I know stay away from rear wheel drive vehicles at least in the winter time. Summer time ok to have fun with rear drive cars.

You'll have many options in varying price ranges when it comes to reliable/serviceable transportation.

Many FWD cars are quite sufficient for driving in the area, year round.

Personally, I use AWD Subaru's … as do many folk throughout the Rocky Mountain West … because they offer a reasonable combination of good handling, utility/space, comforts, and OK fuel economy of approx. 30 mpg on the highway. Not unusual to see a composite driving fuel economy of 28-29 mpg in summer months. They are popular, have dealers and independent shops that work on them throughout the region. My pair are now 2007 OBW's with automatic transmissions. After years of driving manual trans Subie's, the automatic cars now get better fuel economy and have a better AWD/traction control system than the manual cars.

But you'll find competent AWD systems in other cars, too.
