...and along with an increase in Rastafarien-population (here in Wyoming) one of course also should logically assume that there MIGHT be a slight up-tick in Vodou-practitioners (coming in/resettling from Haiti/Dominican Republic) which means maybe two or more 'Bokor' (male) or 'Caplata' (female) Vodou witches have also set up 'house & hut'...

...and chicken-blood/sacrifice IS integral-to/part & parcel of thier unique religious-ceremony...

...so there's THAT too, to consider...

(I AM joking of course)

I have a secure area that serves as both an indoor-outdoor cattery and an enclosure for my chickens. There is either an eight foot high board fence or building wall on the sides. I have hardware cloth on the top and bottom. The bottom wire is buried. There are no gaps. I've had pet chickens for over forty years (I currently have seven) without a single mishap. My area is filled with predators.

My cats have always been fine with chickens although I've never had baby chicks. Something to remember: those who have pet chickens don't eat chicken for long.

LOL! My wife grew up on a "city farm" -- 10 acres adjoining the city. Her dad bought a calf, thinking they'd raise it and butcher it. Except the calf thought it was a dog and followed the kids everywhere. They finally gave it away, and those people couldn't butcher it either. "Dog-cow."

In WY and most of western USA,

You need a 'free-range' cage that is 100% enclosed (ALL (6) sides), top and bottom included (snakes and hawks). I built one on a portable frame (with wheels) that I can tow behind the lawn tractor. I move it every week (when I mow).

Bobcats can smell chicken from FAR away!, even possums delighted in killing our chickens.

Hot wire around the base of your enclosure works good for added protection from dogs, coons, cats, and coyotes.

I was always amazed in Thailand that the dogs and chickens 'co-exist' in freedom. Guess it is because either could be 'tonight's dinner' for us 2 legged predators.

You can't safely free range chickens anywhere, probably not anywhere in the world.

My chickens were securely locked up at night, let out well after sunrise, put up well before sunset, let loose to forage and exercise into a 9 foot tall game fence to keep dogs and coyotes away.

The crows flew into my safe fenced yard during the middle of the day and killed chickens and ducks.

Something came over the 9 foot fence and in one night killed and carried away five full size geese.

Everything eats chickens, including the occassional dishonest human neighbor.

Incidently, a whole lot of things also eat expensive laying pellets. Those critters are hard to keep out, too, and it increases the cost of your eggs pretty substantially if half your feed goes to mice and songbirds.

Maybe that's why everything tastes like chicken.

Bobcat don't mind fences at all. I am familiar with Lance Creek country. You have bobcat, even if you don't see them.

Everything seems to like chicken. You want your chickens to have a long life, they will need a good enclosure. And even then you're going to lose some.

the chicken sacrifice is considered too extreme and out of vogue for most modern pagan religions. These days they just lay out a bowl of fruit as an offering to the spirits. Works for me anyway...
