COZINATOR is on a distinguished road
Default Need Advise ON Move To Wyoming

Hi y'all!

I was wondering, can someone please tell me where in Wyoming I should aim for?

Here are my needs:

Machinist job not too far.
40 acres of wooded land.
A place I can go shooting.

After much research, Wyoming looks like where I wish to move to, make roots! So far Casper looks ok,

Please advise,
TIA
COZ

Wooded acreage in Wyoming can be hard to find near where jobs are available. Most of the parcels available around Casper don't have many trees. The wooded areas in Wyoming are mostly in western Wyoming, in places like Jackson, which is very expensive, or possibly Cody or Sheridan, which are somewhat more affordable. You might find something like what you're looking for up in the northeast part of the state, either north of Gillette, or around Sundance, though wooded areas would be isolated and far from things like shopping and jobs. There's not much in the way of amenities (or anything else) up in that area, so shooting should be OK. Of the areas mentioned, I think the area around Gillette would be most likely for work as a machinist.

First off, check out this site. https://www.wyomingatwork.com/

It lists every job available in Wyoming. Find an area that supports your skill.

Wooded acerages. Casper, Buffalo, Story, Sheridan, Ranchester, just to name a few on the East side of the Rockies. I'm not real familiar with the West side.

These towns are all withing a short commute of your type of work. Also, these towns are very little wind. Unlike a lot of places in Wyoming. They also afford great opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, and such.

I don't think ElkHunter intended to include Casper in his list of towns that have little wind. Casper does have winds, but they abate some in summer. You could look here for land and homes:

http://www.homesandlandmagazinewyomi...cfm?MagId=2131

Request a free magazine with all the listings of the area, or other areas of the State...they have many land listings.

haha I did include Casper. For the most part, Casper isn't real bad. Not like a lot of places that forested acres can be had. Casper does get some wind, but it's tolerable. I mean, 80,000 people can't be all wrong. haha

Actually, I was looking for forested acres more then anything. When I thought of Cody, Powell, and that area and the 129 mph winds they had last year, I kind of ruled that area out.

Casper has 80 thousand people?? Wow! When I traveled through there like a year and a half ago, you would have never known it. It had that small town feeling and for as many people as you say, I wouldn't have never guessed it. I guess they are really spread out. I guess one does learn something new each day.

Casper proper doesn't have 80,000. More like 60k. But when you add up Bar-Nunn, Mills, and the outlying area, it'll hit 80k. I include those numbers because even though the actual city isn't 80k, you'll be competing in the grocery line with 80k worth of people.

Bar Nunn has many new homes going up. Evansville is also a suburb of Casper. Mills hasn't grown near as much as Bar Nunn. And he is right...when you are in the lines at the stores, it seems there are far more than 80k!

I cannot imagine 129 mph winds. Casper had many days in a row with 40-60 mph winds/75-80 mph gusts this winter. More snow also. But 129 is just daft.

Don't overlook the Black Hills in the NE part of the state. We're about 25 miles from wooded land, and there are plenty of machinist jobs here.

You are quite right. There is the Gillette area, Hullett, New Haven, Sundance, Alladin, Keyhole, etc...then Newcastle is another small town that is situated 7-8 miles from the South Dakota border. I lived there a few years and loved being in the Black Hills. It is close to everything - Gillette, Spearfish, Rapid City for shopping purposes....and close enough to all the Black Hills tourist spots. Also close enough to fishing and hunting areas. The last I looked, there were several parcels of land in the wooded areas that were for sale.
