Highland Lady or for those who know. I was reading my Oregon Trail book and I'm reading the story of Ezra Meeker who in 1906 retraced the Oregon Trail route with his Two Ox's and established Monuments along the way. He traveled West to East and placed markers. Do these markers still exist today? He eventually went to Washington D.C. with his Ox, though one died along the way in Nebraska I believe, but he bought another Ox later in his journey. He even crossed the Brooklyn Bridge with his wagon. What a sight to see back in those days I bet. Anyways, he got to meet Teddy Roosevelt while in D.C. too and he was interested in what Ezra Meeker was doing and helped fund some money to him I believe. That's as far as I got. I read more later. It was a quite interesting story. In my book has some old photo's of him on his trip and some markers along the way. Just curious to know if you have seen these markers.
Thanks!

Interesting post WyattE. Do you know why Ezra Meeker decided to take the trip and place the markers?
Didn't Teddy Roosevelt make Devils Tower the first national monument or state park?
It's a little hard to imagine walking from Oregon to Washington DC in this day of go fast cars!

Ezra Meeker made the trips to gather support along the way to make it a nationally recognized historical marker so that future generations would not forget what had happened along the way. From what I've read about him, he was a popular man who would speak in towns as he traveled to and fro. He lived to be in his late Nineties I believe. And he made the trip several times when he was of old age. It was an interesting read.
I wish our schools wouldn't just skim our American History. I wish it could all be preserved for future generations to learn the stories that I'm learning and was never taught. But I guess if one is interested in the time period, they will make their own effort to read up on it. I think Teddy Roosevelt did his best to preserve what he could all across our Country. I hope the next Prez can focus his/her efforts on our Country, but that's another thread that I don't want to be vocal on.

Don't get me started of the nonteaching or false teaching of our history. I am trying to wrap up a huge project tied to the history of black education. I am shocked at the misinformation and lack of knowledge about this subject. We can all learn something from history.
I am glad for the posts about Ezra Meeker and look forward to reading more. Right now I don't know what I am going to do with the information about the Trail that I am collecting, but I do know I am looking forward to driving and walking along the route. ASAP!!!

I wish I could be walking it ASAP too! One day though I'll make it happen. I would like to do it before the land disappears. To me, it's sacred ground. All races in this country should have their sacred ground preserved for future generations.
Good luck Clay Lady and let me know how it turns out and I hope you can take tons of pictures and share them with us all.

You can count on it WyattE. I just got a new camera, now I just have to figure out how to post them online! There is something funny about my cumputer/internet connection besides the fact that right now I am still on dial up. Rural life.
Hopefully the project will be going to school!
Highlandlady must still be shifting gears across the state.

Hello and my apologies...just returned home from Alaska. As you can see...Ezra Meeker traversed the trail many times and yes, he fashioned a marker at the Parting of the Ways - it is still standing. He also engraved on Independence Rock, on the southwest side. It reads 'Old Oregon Trail' in large letters, but it is barely legible. He did much for the Trail preservation. I think, if I remember right, he lost a brother in the Devil's Gate area.
