I met Mike the first week I lived in Gillette in 1971. I've liked him and respected him since that first meeting in his retail shoe store. He made the announcement an hour ago at the Gillette City Hall.

As a Wyomingite, I'm sorry to see him leave the Senate, but as a friend, good for you, Mike! Take your retirement and enjoy your remaining years. You've earned it, and there are fish that need to be caught.

Any early predictions as to who’s going to win his seat?

Good deal. For him personally, anyway. I wish him many peaceful years back home.

Gale McGee (D) was one of Wyoming's U.S. Senators when I moved to Wyoming in '71. I don't know how that happened. He didn't last too long. I've been around to see a (small) handful of Democrats grab Wyoming's gubernatorial race, but I was just writing to someone this morning about the lack of success for Democrats running in Wyoming. It takes a rather conservative Democrat to do it, or sometimes it takes a slick maneuver.

I remember when Governor Ed Herschler was running for his second term against John Ostlund. John was a good guy who I'm proud to say I knew fairly well, and I think he had the win nearly secured. Then Herschler announced his plan for a major tax cut for homeowners as the election drew near. (Like zero home taxes if I remember right!) I was a newspaper editor at the time and saw the story come over the TTS machine. ("Oh crap!") He won by a less than 1% margin. He went on to win a third term by nearly a 2-1 margin.

Someone found Enzi and called 911, Daly said. He was taken to the hospital and stabilized before being flown to Loveland, Colorado, via air ambulance"
