Oh, what the heck, I'll jump in here. I'm waiting for our fireworks party to start at 7:30OM, so I've got time to kill.

I've read through every post (like I said, we're waiting for dark to fall ).

Don't want to argue or fight over anything, but the above post is just mean-spirited, lisan23, and unnecessary. I am curious, you've said twice that your father is from Africa, but why is that relevant? Is he black, or is he a white African?

I, too, have "friends" and "family" who been treated in a negative way while living in mormon-dominated areas, much the same way as has been described here.

So, has anyone read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer?

Many of her posts have been sort of mean-spirited; taking it very personally, which you really shouldn't do on a forum if you are that thin-skinned. I'd love to read it - I LOVE his writing!!! Have to check that one out - thanks! What is the point of it exactly? Pleural marriages?

And yes, if you grow up as a kid in a town you aren't going to see the influence so much - especially as just a summer resident. If you listened to your parents talk about things a lot you may pick up on some of it but you wouldn't likely understand most of it. It does exist - good or bad.

If you were to get a little information regarding LDS Temple Rites and Rituals, you would discover that "Temple Mormons" are "sealed" to multiple partners for eternity...that is, they undergo Temple marriages. Though illegal governmentally, they "legalize" multiple marriages by making them a part of their Temple experiences, which is a part of the reason for the "temple garments" or underwear, they wear.

im not sure who you were addressing this post to but i dont understand your point either.'temple garments'per se have nothing to do with marriage, multiple or otherwise.only those deemed 'worthy' of a 'temple recommend'to begin with can gain access to a temple and those mormans would already have 'temple garments'.a morman couple who qualifies to enter the temple can be married and 'sealed for eternity' under their religion but so what?a 'temple sealing' between a man and woman is a legal marriage and there have been no verified 'plural marriage' temple sealings in this country since the 1920's[though some will argue whether there were any done between the 1890's and the 1920's]temple garments are something you are expected to wear to show you are 'worthy' to enter the temple and participate in the rituals that occur there.there is a religion forum here at city/data where i am sure if you wish to start a thread on the subject there you will have no shortage of people willing to ..uh...discuss the issue.since there is no temple to my knowledge in the whole state of wyoming its not real relevant to this board.

My point is not to slam mormons, or anyone else. I found the book relevant to this discussion because it points exactly to what occurs in areas - Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, anywhere - where mormons are in complete control of the local government and economy. As has been referred to previously, it creates a situation that's much more entrenched than the "good ol' boy" network.

I realize that I am an outsider to the mormon faith, and don't have a great deal of experience with the subject. I only happened upon this thread because I was checking into Cody, and northern Wyoming. I think the discussion - and book - have to do with acceptance and livability in heavily mormon areas.

My impressions, right or wrong, are that if you are not a mormon in such areas, you will have difficulty in job and house hunting, and more importantly, socialization. Most of this comes from second-hand ("family" and "friends'" experiences) information, and reading.

While this thread is called Mormons and Wyoming, replace Wyoming with any other place (including parts of Oregon) where mormons have a strong foothold. Things don't change much from state to state.

WYOMAMA - I love the way Krakauer writes, very easy reading to me, in that he really holds one's attention. The book deals with the history of the Mormon Church from its beginnings to its present day, but is woven around a real-life account of "righteous" murders. It touches on most of the points of history and current life that've been discussed here - IMHO~.

Well, I just cannot help myself: it's "polygamy" -- that is the correct spelling. It's "bigamy" -- the correct spelling. However! that aside now, may I toss this into this 'discussion': New York City. Huge, yes? Millions and millions live there, yes? Do you guys know that the majority are -- gasp!-- Catholic?? Yes indeed: all the Italians and Irish? In common: Catholic. So: does the Pope run NYC?

ALSO: Most of the posts here re: "Mormons" (correct spelling, btw) is ridiculous and false. The LDS do not practice polygamy. The LDS do not have secret covens that go around murdering ppl. The LDS garments aren't for anything mentioned here. And, it isn't even polygamy; it's POLYGYNY. Geez.

I think this thread has run it's course. The original thought has now become a spelling contest and is accomplishing nothing.
