Default Does the wind effect outdoor activities?

I really enjoy outdour activities and the shooting sports, particularly Trap Shooting. I know that wind can make for a very "interesting" day at the trap range. Do people still engage in these pursuits in Casper and some of the windier areas? I'd hate to have to give it up especially now that I got my ten year old daughter into the sport too. We have a blast busting clays together. Are there any sportsman's clubs around Casper for average folks?

There are days that you can't shoot because of the wind but not very often. Windier in the winter anyway - so sometimes it's too cold anyway. We live 100 miles south of Casper in Wheatland. Trucks blow over on the freeway here quite often because of the wind. We shoot trap. There's a pretty active club here. I'm not sure what kinds of clubs there are around Casper though.

I'm glad to hear that trap shooting isn't out of the question especially since as I write this there is a youth model Remington 870 Wingmaster 20 gauge under our Christmas tree. My daughter saw it in the rack at the gun store back in October and said that it was "adorable."

There is one skeet shooting place and three trap shooting places in Casper. And on public land most of anyway. You can take a thrower and clay pigeons out and make it a day. I have over time shot at all four. The wind does make a difference but you just have to deal with it. It has never stopped a turkey shoot or gun club shoot. Just seperated the men/wemon from the boys/girls.

Trap shooting is for wooses. You gotta be able to hit a clay when the winds are 30+ cross. hahaha Just kidding. Up here in Sheridan we have a half dozen trap ranges. Matter of fact, the national finals were held up here this year. Windage? Yeah, you probably better factor that in. I've never had any problem.

Matter of fact, last week I got two pheasants. Woops, did I say that out loud? Season was over about a month ago. Damn things were aggresive, I thought they would attack so I shot them. I thought I would die. It was either them or me. But they tasted good.

That's good info about the wind. I shoot fast loads at about 1350 fps but with only 7/8 oz of 7 1/2 shot (12 ga), to save the shoulder. I hope the fast load will help me get to the clay before the wind makes it do something crazy.

We don't have enough pheasant left in Mi. to have an official season. We have a place where you can pay a few hundred bucks to shoot at released pheasants. I can't afford that so I haven't tasted pheasant since 1986. I still see a wild one once in awhile and hear roosters every now and then. I wouldn't take a shot at them out of season because if you get caught in Michigan it is grounds for revoking your concealed pistol liscence. Since I got my liscence I have been hyper vigilant about not breaking any laws no matter how minor.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, a CCW does make you stand up and pay attention to the laws.

Wyoming normally didn't have much for pheasant population. A few years back, the fish and game reintroduced them. Trucked them in from some where and started a program or reproduction. It has worked out great! We now have pheasants everywhere in an area not normally known for pheasants. I can't drive to work without seeing several. Where I live, is in town, but I have to leave town, drive about a half mile and then re-enter town. during that half mile I'm surprised if I don't see Deer, Pheasants and such.

That is great news. Are these the ring necked pheasant? Our DNR planted szechwan pheasant (odd looking little birds) all over Michigan because they were supposed to be hardier and more prolific breeders than the ring necks. These wierd looking birds never had a chance because they planted coyotes at the same time to reduce the deer population but ofcourse they ate up all of these freshly released and disoriented ground nesting birds. We saw szechwans for a few years and then never saw another. Just another big waste of tax dollars.

Yes, they are ringneck. And lots of them. The only complaint I've heard from hunters is that towards the end of season, they can't get very close to them. I don't have a problem with distance, I have a 12 gauge choked down so tight it'll blow a 4 inch hole in cardboard at 27 yards. So as the season progresses and they get a little more skiddish, I just switch to that gun.

Gee,I sure hope you guys aren't thinking of pointing any of these guns at the men and women of law enforcement. I wouldn't normally get a case of the creeps reading these posts, but I've sure helped a lot of right-wing white crazies from Wyoming and Montana find new homes in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, over the last five years or so. Happy new year and safe hunting!
