I think it's maybe even worse than Telluride because of Yellowstone. When I was there last summer, downtown looked like someone took the entire visiting crowd at Disneyworld and put them down in Jackson. And about half of them were in line in front of me at Pearl St Bagels.

One thing I just gotta throw in here...
Jackson is the town. Jackson Hole (actually Jackson's Hole, right?) is the actual hole in the midst of the mountain range...the valley, so-to-speak. The folks who refer to the town of Jackson as "Jackson Hole" are probably overwhelmingly the tourist kids there with their parents for family vacation at Yellowstone...the ones with the brand new "JACKSON HOLE" tshirts.
You are right about JH being the AREA not the town. That drives me nuts too but JH has become so populated that other little towns like Moose & I can't think of what others...where Jackson Lake Dam is, etc., that is all just the same thing. And yes - it has become like Telluride, Aspen & CB in CO. Is so sad because I lived in CO in the 70's & T'ride & CB at least were great places - the bluegrass festival in T'ride was the greatest & there were NO condos - not even a concept yet. Same with Breckenridge, where I used to do most of my skiing (back when it was 1 mountain and a WHOPPING $20 for a full day pass...). I remember seeing these "apartment buildings" going up in a week or so suddenly going from Fairplay down the pass to Breck & then even up the road to the lodge & I was really confused when I heard ppl were BUYING their apartments!!! Then I quit going. I hated it after that. They were such great towns before they were "discovered". Why do ppl want to MOVE to their fav vacation spots????? JACKSON is the name of the town, not Jackson's Hole - you got that right and thanks for pointing that out. You can DEFINITELY tell the non-natives or non-long-time residents when they refer to JH. And is funny cause I'll talk to ppl & they will refer to JH & I'll say, "you mean Jackson"? & they will say, no, it was Jackson Hole and try to tell me it was a different place. Ok...WHATEVER.....

The rest are in line at ALL the little coffee shops....and tourists in the rubber tomahawk shops all around the plaza. UGH!!!! DO NOT expect there to be useful shopping there. It is ANYTHING but self-contained for survival.

And yeah - it IS like they did a big bucket swoosh at Disneyworld with a fire-chopper getting water bringing up only ppl with fanny packs, cameras, & with that totally blank lost looks on their faces - and they are ALL in the streets walking trying to find their ways around. Bike is VITAL if you are going to live there - very little parking & as I said - pedestrians have the right of way (law or not I don't know, but they take it & they abuse it. In Cody we make sure we screech to a stop to train our tourists that we have traffic lights & crosswalks. But you still have those that stop quickly to look at a store or drop somebody off & that will nearly kill you too - back roads are the only saving factor there...or motorcycles. THAT's the way to go here.

Basically dorms several miles from town because those who really work for a living *unless a professional* cannot afford to live in town. Down by Hoback or over towards Alpine or over the pass in Wilson. Is a bit of a drive - esp. in the winter.

There aren't a whole lot of "apartments" per se, in Jackson. Not that I remember seeing at least. You might be able to score something up in Teton Village if you have the $$. Jackson's a small town, and real estate is in high demand. I have a friend who runs a business and rents a home in town, but he's been there a pretty long time now, and has deep roots in the scene in Jackson. I have another friend there...a fairly high profile business owner in town...who actually lives over the pass in Victor, ID.

Exactly. Somewhere out of town there are some "dorm" type apartments (cheap built but I am SURE not cheap to rent). From the locals I've talked to & from those I know there most live in Idaho which can be a wicked drive in the winter & esp. w/the price of gas heading up so high. Wonder if it has hit $4 yet - we are at $3.78 or about that in Cody....and we are usually the 2nd most expensive in the state.

There are no " out of town" dorm style units.

There are condos and some apartments but most single people share homes with roommates. Housing is not cheap but being from the city you are used to that.

You can also live across the pass( Idaho) or down the valley ( Alpine). There is also the option of caretaking. That is not easy to find but after you have been here for awhile and have contacts (also depending on your work situation) can be great. We lived in a 2 bedroom highend cabin on a 7 acre proprty on the Snake River close to the Ski resort, rent free for some small caretaking duties.

Please don't let the negatives outweigh the positives. It is a beautifull place to live and work. It is what you make of it. There are some great oppurtunities and people here.

This sounds great! Is there a website to look into caretaking? What type of duties are involved?
