To AMANDA: You are dead wrong about the posters here being rude , stupid, or whiners/bi***ers. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Its been a little over two years since I was last in Wyoming, but let me tell you what I know, not what some rich dude in SoCal read online somewhere. Wyoming is rough, rugged country, and if you're going to make it out there, then you're going to have to become rough, rugged, and self-reliant, to a degree unknown to people from the eastern and southern parts of our country. These folks, and they read like good folks to me, are simply trying to tell you that you cannot live in Wyo as if you were in New York, Penn, Kentucky, or Miss, or any other densely populated, old-settlement state. The realities of life in a tough place like that can kill you (literally), if you are not very careful and committed to a complete change , in your expectations of daily life! So if you read this and are offended by it, then you'll know that a Real West state like Wyoming is just not for you. Don't think that I am looking down on you, I just don't want you to go in unprepared, and suffer really horrible consequences. I am myself getting ready to ditch my longtime home of Kentucky, in order to pursue career objectives in the Chattanooga, Tn area. So, if you need the conveniences of a population dense area, then , by all means, stay far away from the American west. There's nothing wrong with that! What ever choice you make, do it only AFTER much research, prayer, and soul searching. You CAN'T go wrong that way. Yes, I have spent a lot of time in Wyo, and I couldn't want to live there, in spite of all the wonderful people I met and worked with there. I just don't want to live the waythat I would have to, in order to be successful and safe in that type of environment. I wish you nothing but good tidings.

Wait a few years, till my wife and I move and you can come live next door

John:
your still thinking of moving to wyoming after all of these post? LOL Im sure that wyoming isnt all that bad..everyone just needs to be a little more welcoming to people moving in. They cant stop people from coming so why be so mean and negative? i dont understand what is so great about living in a state with a total population of 500,000 or having to drive 100 miles until you reach a store or gas station? if anything i would want more people to move to the state so that the population and area will grow.
but then again if i was going to go and post something on the forum about cary, nc or raleigh, nc i guess i wouldnt sound to positive either. i wouldnt push people away, but i also wouldnt lie to them and say how great the place is...BECAUSE IT ISNT. the people here cant drive..my bf and i joke about how they are sheeple (people who are slow and drive in herds ), they think they are Gods gift to man, and the sad part is..the moto for there town is : "Where better living begins." I mean really...what is that suppost to tell the rest of the state? The funny part is that Cary has the most problems...they have e coli scares all the time. but enough about NC.

Sure Ain't gorna stop me. Will be WY or MT. I still haven't figured that out yet. It does seem like you get more for your $$$ in WY, but I love the trees and mountians in MT. Guess I'll go where the jobs are. Riverton is beginning to look nice on paper. I was favoring NW Wyoming, but it doesn't seem like to many jobs available in Cody/Powell/Lovell/Wapiti.
I plan to live on the outskirts of a town. No subdivision (hopefully) some horse acreage. Nearest neighbor 1/2 a mile away.

That is exactly the type of thing the locals of WY and MT don't want, and to be honest, I can't blame them. They like the seclusion and the small town rural feel. I do also, and I would not want to see massive amounts of growth. I would rather "adapt" as needed to live life there like it is, rather than have urban sprawl. Heck, if I wanted urban sprawl, I'll stay where I'm at.
I was trying to tell my wife the other day, when we had a "cold spell" here of 27 degrees at night. I told her, that when we move this will be considered a comfortable high temp for winter time in MT and WY. Are you ready? She says yes, but I don't think she really understands what I'm saying.... This kind of cold last for months at a time, although she has lived where it snows, but only as a child, while I have never lived in snow.
Guess we'll stay cooped up in the shack in front of the fireplace and practice making kids
Definitely need to plan some vacations, and travel to these places during the worst weather time of year...as well as during nice weather. I am going to try to visit MT and WY in late spring or early summer. Scope them all out, and then go back in Dec/Feb also for the worst weather.

Amanda,
I try to be subjective so here's my two cents worth.
In Wyoming, you will encounter very friendly people that will judge you on how good of a neighbor you are, not by your religion, your race or anything else. They watch you move in and then they see how you do. Loud parties, different vehicles pulling up at all hours of the day. They will judge. but if your quiet, or at least respectful, they will also judge, but it's in a different tone.
When I got back here from the Navy, after a month we had a welcome home/home coming party. I simply walked up the street and told the neighbors that we were going to have a party and if at any time, here's my phone number, let me know if we are getting too roudy. If anybody blocks your driveway, call me, I will immediately have it removed.
Next day, I did a little follow up. I again went up the street and chatted with each neighbor. Every one of them said, "Oh, it wasn't a bother, we didn't even hear anything.
Friendly folks. They'll take care of you in bad weather. The other day, I got up kind of late and put on my coat and was going to shovel my walk. When I went outside, my walk was shoveled except about the last 5 feet and there was my 70+ female neighbor shoveling my walk. I walked down and said, "What are you doing?" She said, it needed shoveled, so I was shoveling it. I said, well come in and have a cup of coffee and warm up, I'll finish it. She come in and had coffee. Next time it snowed, I made sure I was up at 4:30 and I shoveled her walk in the dark.
But, I think, what a lot of folks are trying to say, is the people up here expect you to hold your own. If you can't because of obligations like children and such, they'll be more then happy to help. But if you can't because your lazy, they won't even talk to you.
Wyoming is a very tough environment. I've seen summer days that were 106 degrees. I've seen winter days that it was -58 degrees. NO WIND CHILL COUNTED. But is it like that all the time? NO it's not. But you have to plan for things like that. I carry a duffle bag in the back seat of my pickup. It has insulated Carhart Bib overalls. Heavy Carhart parka with hood. Lined Elk Sking gloves. And a complete change of clothes. It goes in my truck in September and comes out in May.
You would be welcome in any town you went to. I'm in Sheridan. the other day, I did a check with about 6 realitors, I checked on line, and I also checked the Sheridan classified adds. There were two places available for rent. A loft with 2 bedrooms. And a studio with two rooms. Several motels offer rooms by the week or month and they have kitchenettes and are fairly nice, but as you can imagine, fairly expensive.

Know your limits
Some people just cant except there not cut out for a certain way of life or how to deal with the people they meet. I myself tried to live in western WA. for awhile. The lady I was with helped me buy new clothes, slacks, fancy shoes, etc. About six months into that, I called it Quits. It was nice to buy wranglers and new boots. Never again. my point is the wide open west can turn into a God forsaken desert. In my case it was overcrowded, liberal land that I quickly hated. God I love MT & WY.

i dont think most of us have been trying to discourage anyone from moving, just letting you know that living in wyoming is very different from living in florida, west virginia, california,or wash dc.of coarse where you choose to live will determine how different.it also depends on your current lifestyle.if you mostly work, pick up a pizza for dinner on the way home, depend on television for most of your entertainment, and live in a neighborhood in casper or cheyenne your life wont be much different then it is now.if you love the site of tree,s,mega-shopping malls, fancy bars and resturaunts but move on a whim to wamsutter, wyoming you will be real disapointed.it seems a lot of people who've never been to wyoming are just picking places on a map at random.for many people wyoming is a wonderful place to live.it just depends on what your interests are.there are a lot of differences in climate, vegetation, and culture between the different cities within the state.there can be a temperature difference of 50-60 degrees in winter between cheyenne and big piney.some people cant live more than 10 miles from a mall or a walmart.a lot of towns in western wyoming are 50-60% lds(morman)[this doesnt bother me but some people it does]before you sell your house you need to at least visit the areas you think you may like, most of wyoming doesnt look like it does in the movies.if you have the right interests and disposition, and move to a part of the state which meshs well with your interests you'll love it in wyoming.just do a lot of research before you commit to a move.

oh i understand! thats just how it is in Cary, NC People here are always trying to have the best of everything. Its funny because not everyone in Cary has that much money, but you wouldnt know because of the size of their house, the car they drive or the clothes they wear.
