Shirley Basin Info??
Hello all, We just received word that my husband has a good possibility in gettig hired for a position in Shirley Basin. We checked out the area, and found that the weather can be pretty rough. So some input from any of you Wyomingians would be wonderful.
Thanks, Peggy

Oh my God! hahahaha I don't want to scare you but Oh My God! haha I worked down in Hanna one winter and wanted to come up to Sheridan. my brother and I went down to Medicin bow and headed north. It was rough. We couldn't see the road. So I would get out and walk in front of the truck and my brother would follow. When I got so cold I couldn't think straight, I'd get in the truck and my brother would walk on the road and I would follow.
It took us 17 hours from Medicin Bow to Casper.
We thought it was nasty in Hanna because of the winds. Little did I know. haha
Lately, the winters have been a lot nicer. We haven't had anything that bad in years. I worked in Hanna back in 1973.
The areas that you are looking at are good. Relatively cheap prices for land, a little expensive on grocery's because of the local. but if you plan on a monthly trip to the bigger cities, you'll do fine.
When I lived in Hanna, they didn't have a grocery store. We had to go to Rawlins, about 35 miles away just to get milk. But when you get used to it, it's no big deal. Kind of becomes habbit.
Does your vehicle have a tank heater? If not, that's a must. About $30 to buy one, another $40 to get it installed. You plug it in to electricity and it will keep your engine at operating temp so it will start just fine even in the dead of winter.
Alternate heating. Make sure you have a stove or something that doesn't require the local power. I have 3 different heat sources in my house.
You'll enjoy it, but you just have to be reasonable.

Thanks!
Gussler, your wisdom astounds me. I seem to always get a laugh from your postings, but there are so realistic I can almost see it. This is not our first choice for a place to move to, but the HR lady that we have been in contact with told us that there is a trailer pad available there for DOT workers. We have been looking in the Casper and Cheyenne papers and housing seems pretty available there and affordable for renting. My ultimate end point is Buffalo if I get my way, but I don't want to pay and arm and a leg to rent a 2-3 bdrm house with a garage and pets if we can avoid it for now. It seems that he can almost get a job anywhere for the WYDOT as it seems they are hurting for drivers. So I guess that decision will be the housing issue when we make our initial visit in July. I have another food for thought for yous. What are the odds of getting a job for some big company and them paying moving expenses if you agree to work for them for a certain amount of time?

You are looking at a wonderful part of the country. Getting them to pay to move you is something altogether different. We, up here in God's country let people fend for themselves. Not by choice, but by commerce. We just don't have the money, or they won't allocate the money to get good people in here. They'd rather put up with what they can get instead of pulling in good people.
if you can get here on your own? DO IT! You will never ever look back and say, "I screwed up." You will love it. Buffalo? Excellent place. Sheridan, a really great place. Big Horn, Story, just about anyplace in the big horns is outstanding.
I've been unemployed since October. Would I relocate? Never. I got a new job and start tomorrow. A ranch. 3500 acres and they have 11 cows. I think I can handle it. hahahahahaha
