I SELDOM go to Billings. I'm an e-shopper. I hate shopping to begin with but isn't so bad online. Cody has a lot of "not everyday" type shops - definitely geared towards expensive decorating of homes, art galleries, & souveniers. There are a few clothing stores & we do have a Sierra Trading Post. Some ppl go to Billings regularly. I personally get frustrated there too & feel it is a wase of time more often than not. I can find better things to do w/a day. I'm not into instant gratification so I have no trouble waiting for items I order to arrive.

Last year, we were awarded and named the Best Western Town in the US.
We don't have a mall, we have "Downtown". A 3 or 4 block area that you can pick up anything you need. We do have a Super Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Home Depot, Starbucks, Albertsons, Safeway, and lots and lots of mom & pop stores.
The people are friendly. We have a city park that is outstanding. Lots of activities, rodeo, street dances, softball, baseball, soccer, concerts, etc. We even have the Wyo Theater. Stage with acters. A open air tram bus that runs the length of town and back.
Sheridan the bad: There is no room. haha Don't get me wrong. The housing situation right now, sucks. There is nothing available for rent in this town. Lots of homes to buy, but nothing to rent. Well, I take that back, there's a couple houses in the $2,500. range for 3 bd 2 ba 2 car garage.
The town got hit with an energy boom a few years back and not wanting to over build, they've been careful. But seeing that the energy boom wasn't going to come and go quickly, they are now trying to build to meet the demand. Over 200 places have been built so far this summer with another 150-200 going up as we speak. Some has been built for low income, some regular, and some high dollar. So this fall should see some relief in the housing market.
To purchase a home, it's expensive right now. But it is on a down trend so it should get a little easier.
Sheridan is located next to the Big Horn mountains. So you head 20 miles west and your in an excellent place for camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, etc. Lake Desmet is about 28 miles South. Tongue River Reservoir is about 20 miles North into Montana. So lots of boating, skiing, and swimming opportunities.
If it's a short visit, there are outstanding vacation cottages available for around $500 a week, complete with kitchens, kitchen utinsils, maid service etc... Some even within 2 blocks of Main street.
Hope that helped answer some questions.

This sounds like a wonderful area with lots to do with the kids and family. Can you tell me what the weather is like? I know it gets all 4 seasons, but can you tell me the average hi's and low's that are more current? About how much snow during the winter? Thank you for the information you provided.

Well, the last year hasn't been real typical. But last winter, we got 6-8 inches of snow, about 5 times. The rest of the winter we just got an inch or so here and there.
We got down below zero just a couple times. Normally we'll get down to -20 a couple two or three times in late January and Feb. March seems like the heavy snow time.
Just this past week we finally hit 90. First time this year. But it was only one day and it's been in the 80's or 70's ever sence.

Thanks for the info :-) Right now I'm in the phoenix area so we have already been as high as 115 for almost 2 weeks. Now that monsoons are starting we are about 104. Can you tell me if it is a really wet cold or more of a dry cold? The cold doesn't bother me cause you can always add things to what you are wearing whereas with the heat you can only take so much off lol.

Whttigr, have you considered the area around Rapid City, South Dakota? People are friendly, the area is very family oriented, the geography is beautiful, and the weather isn't as harsh as Wyoming.
I looked at Sheridan and while I found the area beautiful, the people were not at all friendly. I spent about three weeks looking for houses and milling about town, and no one smiles in that town. It didn't seem like the place for me, but I couldn't afford it anyway, at least not last fall when I was looking.

You got that right - and they got higher when they legalized gambling in SD a couple decades ago. Most of my family "outlaws" (very dear ppl to me) live in the Sturgis / Deadwood area (Meade & Lawrence counties). Taxes are wicked now. Gotta pay for the social afflictions of gambling somehow...Deadwood used to be my fav town in the world; lived there for awhile & then it changed SO MUCH as soon as the saloons started coming out of the back rooms I don't even like to go there now because I can remember the OLD Deadwood when most ppl there were miners & everybody were neighbors helping neighbors.

I grew up across the road from Johnson Siding on Hwy 44. I still get a kick out of that. It was Hwy 40 for years. We didn't move, but we got a new address. haha
