Default Thinking About Moving...from MI

Hey

Me and my fiance have been seriously contemplating moving out to Casper here in the next year or so. I will be just finishing my bachelors degree in business administration, and he has been working in the automotive industry as a supervisor for 13 years. We both love to hunt and fish, and just enjoy smaller town living. Any info on Casper would be very much appreciated. We are hoping to make a trip out there this summer to visit, just to make sure its somewhere we would like to be!

Thanks Again!

Brittany & Brian

You might want to do a monster search on the jobs in the area, in addition to the CasperST, or call the businesses in your fields directly with your job inquiry. The ST doesn't have much of a classified section ....

Default Casper?

I've seen a lot of postings asking about Casper. I'm just curious as to why a person would pick Casper? Don't get me wrong, it's filled with wonderful people and the mountains just South of town are absolutely beautiful. But for someone that hasn't been there, wanting to move there has my curiousity up.

When you think of moving to someplace you've never been before, you think of the scenery, the availability of medical services, the schools, a lot of different things. I don't see anything outward, about Casper. But a lot of people have asked about it and it just got me thinking. I live up in Sheridan, it's about 140 miles north of Casper nestled up against the Big Horn Mountains. I have a very dear friend that lives in Casper and I visit every chance I get. Not as often as I'd like to. I don't like wind. Yeah, I know, I live in Wyoming. It's here. Live with it. haha But there are places where it blows more then other places. Casper is one of those places.

I used to work down in Hanna, we built a coal silo. Worked 350 feet off the ground. Super said if the wind ever stopped, we'd all fall off. Walking 6 inch beams at a angle leaning into the wind. Super wouldn't come up there. He said, "Earth was meant to walk on."

I am from Michigan- the Ann Arbor area. My husband worked at GM, and I can tell you that your standard of living is going to go down drastically! You will not find the good pay that you did at the automotive industry- the medical is 15-20 years behind, there are no regulations when it comes to building standards- it is a whole different lifestyle here- and I don't mean on the good side anymore. The posts on knowing exactly what you are getting into by moving here is great- you are not going to find Utopia here- it is a harder life here, than in Michigan, that we can attest to. If you want beautiful views, great, if you want to leave the drugs behind, forget it, the meth in Wyoming is now a very big problem- (the drug people thought the same as you- Wyoming is a lightly populated state( who would even know if I was making meth?)- well, so many other bad people have thought the same way- and moved here to make/sell drugs. Wyoming and Montana have the highest incidence of fatal drunk driving fatalities any other states- we have a high percentage of illegals compared to the population. I could go on and on-but Shadowalker said it best in his post today........ I so wish I could move to a place where there were jobs that were constant, less drugs, less drunk driving, better living costs, more up to date medicine (and I know, as a nurse from big teaching hospitals), to be in a place where you are not taxed to use water on your own place, to be in a part of the country where the counties will help, as in other states in getting rid of the many noxious weeds........... I guess you have to live here for awhile to see the truth,

Default dc53

You don't know how bad I wanted to say that you were full of beans. But I can't. You laid it out so truthful, I can't argue.

I live in a really wonderful area. But yeah, we have a drug problem here. I have 7 kids and they've always been smart and have avoided the drug problem. But they could have got caught up. they didn't, thank you lord.

Now, I have to start a fire in my fire place, cause I'm chilly. hahaha

Default problems

dc53 you are correct. Wyoming does have problems but everywhere does. I've lived all over the country and every place we've lived has some kind of problem. Drugs are a problem everywhere - not just in WY also. As far as medical care. I was in the hospital in Minneapolis - my husband wouldn't leave the room as the care was so poor, Mayo clinic not much better. I've had way better care and better relationships with my Doctors here than anywhere else. At least here I'm a person - with a name and everything!

If you are unhappy here - move. That's one thing we've always said whenever we moved somewhere - if we decide we don't like it we don't have to stay.

MHT What you say is true- I am trying to find a place to move to. I am trying to find a place where drugs don't seem to be so bad (for a town of 5,000, we have just had another meth bust). A place where you will not get ripped off by people who hang out a shingle to do a job, but have no training (I had a builder out yesterday to fix the barn door- after he put 2 new rollers on, he said he didn't know what the other parts were for(5 pieces that came in the kit). I want to know that when I have a house built, that they really have the knowledge of what they are doing, not just say so. I want to be in an area that is up to date in medical areas. Is this too much to ask- or in todays world am I dreaming- maybe mankind cannot be self governing anymore anywhere?? I know there are some good people here, but I ould like to get rid of the bad, greedy, self centered! I could be going from fire to frying pan- I just don't know where good people are anymore! I wish there were a place where only good people live!

DC53

I live in Sheridan. We do not have a drug problem that can be seen. Not sure how to put this. We don't have an outward problem, but idiots can find it anyhow. haha I'm saying that it's not a problem that you can see. But I worked for the Sheriff's department and the DCI officers could sniff it out. but I haven't seen it myself. It's not prevalent on the street. Least, not like I saw when I was in California in the Military. You could walk down the street and somebody would stop you and almost demand that you buy drugs from them. Doesn't happen here. Problem? Yeah, probably. Big problem? No.
