Unfortunately this happens all the time. I know several people this has happened to, one family ended up buying their rental because of it.
Not all landlords use a "lease" and as long as you give a person 30-45 days notice according to most rental contracts that is good enough to the owner.
While I don't agree with it, that is how it goes most of the time.
Some people are willing to work with you, while others are not.
Things will start to slow down I think in the next few years and more rentals will become available hopefully. Only time will tell though...
