No, you really never have to "Draw" for tags. You draw to try and get tags for what you want and where you want.

G&F count animals and issue tags for a particular harvest. That's the draw. You ask for your #1 choice, #2 choice, and then #3 choice. Say your number one choice is Casper area for a bull elk.

At the end of the summer, they do another count and then they rectify the numbers. Maybe they didn't have winter kill or disease kill like they thought they did, so they issue more tags that you can pick up at your local sports shop. But now, you have to take what they got. Maybe the only tags available are area 38 above Sheridan in the Big Horns and the tags are only for a cow.

So you don't have to draw, you can wait and purchase one of the late tags. But if you want a particular area, you'd better put in for the draw. That's what I do. Put in for the draw, if I don't get what I want, I'll search for late tags to get something close to what I want.

Also, you can check out this website, it's got all the G&F laws.

One of the better areas are the Shirley's - area 16. It is a difficult area to obtain, but the bulls there are quite grand. It took moving to Alaska to finally draw that area...

I would recommend the Saratoga/Medicine Bow area for general.

as far as land goes...it really depends on where exactly it is.....if there's any trees/windbreak, any water (some people have to spend about $25-75K just to drill for water); if there's utilities at or near the property, etc.

As far as hunting tags, that's pretty much been covered; however it also depends on what you plan on hunting. If you're hunting deer/elk....that's not really an issue....if you plan on going up and hunting a Bighorn Ram...then yes, you still have to draw).

Welcome to Wyoming! Enjoy!

There is a general hunting tag too for elk & deer that you can just go buy. But for the late season you do want to put in for the draw. And good luck. Some are lucky & draw fairly reg'ly & some wait YEARS & YEARS, but it does depend upon where you put in for & how many they draw for those areas as opposed to how many ppl put in in that area. Go to Wyoming Game and Fish - Home - 1 to find out all you need.

Thanks. the only big game we can hunt in VA deer and turkey.

$30000 seems to be very good for 40 acres i live in VA and 40 acres will run you $250000 if your lucky.

Only hard part is it will be a few years befor i will build so finding a place to stay seems to be hard but all i need is a bathroom and a bed and i am happy LOL.

i wouldnt buy anything there without looking at it first,a lot of places have seasonal access, some have no hope of having a well, and some have things zoned in such a way that there is no legal way to build anything on the property.i would check with the county to be sure you will be able to use it for what you intend

The hunting situation's already been explained well.... your potential piece of land sounds like the Brooks development. That's been a mixed bag; a buddy of mine got a good piece, but there have been quite a few others who have gotten areas where water is an issue. You wouldn't have to worry about access there; it's year-round unless there's something abnormal that's going to shut everything down. Utilities are to the property line.... that may make a difference where you want to build as running line is not cheap. If it's in an area on the property you would not mind building at or you don't mind running power you're good to go. Your well is what you really want to be concerned about.
