Hi We live in Rock Springs. We are general contractor's here, there is a definate need for people in all phases of construction. Things would move along more quickly here if there was a better workforce. Because of the Trona field and other's, if you have a pulse and are standing upright you can get a job with them. So... it makes it hard for companies that are paying $15 to $20 dollars an hour to find good people to work. If you do plan a move here I would suggest that you come spend a week and check it out. The wind isn't bad here not compared to Cheyenne anyway. There are no trees, not a one, which may be a shock coming from the midwest. There are very nice people here who have lived here a long time but this is a roughneck town and there are a lot of people here who are on a more transient basis too. Which drags down the quality of life. The current mayor and other's are trying to clean up Rock Springs and change all of that but that all takes time. Honestly we will be here a few more years and then we are moving on. Hope that helps, if I can answer any questions for you I will. Was the heavy equipment experience related to dirt moving?

Default Rock Springs?

I wouldn't live there for nothing. Now, having said that, I probably should live there. haha I live up in Sheridan and I was a contractor. Had my license and build a lot of buildings. Most of them in Rock Springs. hahaha I thought I had a nice comfortable business here and ended up spending more time in Rock Springs building.

Wonderful people there. I've also got to say, you will not find better restaurants anywhere in the state. I worked for Taiwan for several years and I can't find better Chinese cooking anyplace other then Rock Springs. Well, I can. Here in Sheridan. But that's only because I don't have to drive so far. haha

Rock Springs is an excellent opportunity for a mud dog.

Thanks for helping out with info everyone. Also thanks to everyone that sends more...Earnie fan... yes I'm experienced in moving dirt.. I've dug basements, septic tanks, drainfeilds and finish grade.. Exp on dozers, hydrahoes, backhoes, payloaders and bobcats.. In addition for masonry I've also done carpentry work, sheating, roofing, drywall finishing, priming and painting and siding, a little bit of most everything just not enough experience in framing to be a crew leader. I'm 37 and I come from a family of block layers so I'm used to working with 2 or 3 of us. Sure sounds interesting in that area.. I would more than likely feel the same way as you, work a few years then move on to someplace else as I'm not moving a family around... Wonder though I have a general contractors license for Michigan..Would Wyoming honor that or would I need to take the test there if I were to decide to work for myself eventually?

Default Contractors license?

Yes, you would have to take it again. But don't worry. the UBC is the UBC. Only have to learn the local stuff. But the Uniform Building Code, is just that.

Surprisingly enough you only need a city licence that's a whopping $50 to own and run a construction company of any type here in Sweetwater county. You just go down to city hall and apply. You also have to have the name of your company on all vehicles that's it. (In Cheyenne you need a Class B GC license to run a job site, but not here, go figure.) We are friends with the company that did the dirt work on the subdivision we are developing, there is definately a need for operators that know what the heck they're doing. There are some concrete company's here, we actually hire out of Cheyenne and Colorado for our foundations and flat work. There is a good company here for curb and gutter. We have a friend that is excellent, his flatwork is the best we've ever seen but he's from Mexico and doesn't have a great understanding of how to bill company's and taking care of employees records and things which is the only thing that keeps him from starting a company. If you were interested in starting your own mud monkey company and moved here I could hook you up with him. The only problem with moving here is finding housing, but being that your single it would be easier. You just have to jump on something as soon as it's available. Most houses for sale are only on the market for a week if that. Rentals are almost impossible you just have to inquire everywhere and take what comes your way. And expect to pay way more than what anything should be worth in this dusty town! ;o))
