Default Lodging south of Yellowstone?

We'll be spending a week in Yellowstone in August, and we've decided sort of last minuteish to drive home through the Tetons (heading to Utah). Can anyone recommend places to look for lodging? We'll be travelling with small children and senior citizens, and we are on a budget that is becoming more limited with every increase in gas prices.

We've already seen that Jackson is booked (and pretty much out of our budget anyway, even if rooms were available). We're wondering about Star Valley or places in eastern Idaho that we can get to easily coming out the south gate of Yellowstone.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

There are a few ma/pa motels in the Jackson area that area still reasonable. There is a Motel 6, for example, but I know it's not as cheap as other Motel 6's.

If you go thru Star Valley there are a few ma/pa motels. You can take a right at Jackson and head to Idaho Falls, about 100 miles, where there are several chains which should have reasonable rates. Then you drive to Poky and head south on the interstate to SLC
