Default Question on your great state?

Ok. I have posted on other threads and wanted to start my own

This is what were looking for. Local hospitals. Both wife and I are in the medical field. I would need to know the supply and demand for LVN "LPN" and RN's and CRT or RRT?

Something local to a lake. 15-30min or even lake side is fine.

I am a country boy and wife is a city girl. So, small town to live in (60k population or less) and a city near by (up to 1hr drive) for shopping for the wife.

Good schools. Through all grades. Even college.

Lot size from 1/4-5 acres is fine

$100k-$300k new style home.

That's all I can think of. I am willing to give up some for a good area (less crime).

Thanks

Well, I can tell you about Sheridan and the area, but will leave the other areas up to the experts that live in those towns.

In Sheridan, there has been a tremendous growth in the medical field. We now have a surgical center, cancer center, etc. Wasn't too many years ago we only had about 4 doctors in town seemed like. But now we have close to 100 doctors. Memorial Hospital is a nice hospital and recently have built on a large portion. I think they're licensed for 84 beds if I'm not mistaken. A new wing they added on houses private doctors offices which is handy to have the doctors office right down the hall from the hospital.

In Sheridan, we have a VA that is really nice.

Sheridan is a town of about 15,800 people. Excellent schools, a lot going on in town. This week is Rodeo week so things are kind of nuts around here.

There's excellent fishing in Lake Desmet, about 28 miles South of here. Also exceling fishing about 24 miles North at Tongue River Res. Good boating at both. Lots of streams around to fish in. We're located about 18 miles from the base of the Big Horn Mountains. When you start up into the Big Horns, there are a bunch of lakes and streams to fish in. Outstanding camping. During the winter, there's over 10,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trail. Several Lodges up on top.

We have great shopping here. Not much you can't find. Although a lot of folks drive up to Billings Montana to shop. Billings has the big name restaurants like Red Lobster and stuff. Billings also has no sales tax. It's located about 127 miles North on the interstate. So people go up and have a nice lunch and do a majority of their shopping and just make a day of it.

Other small towns within 35 miles of here include, Buffalo, Story, Banner, Big Horn, Ranchester, and Dayton. Buffalo being the biggest at about 6,000 people.

Nice thing about Sheridan and the surrounding towns are that being nestled up against the Big Horn mountains, we don't have much wind like a lot of the state has.

Wyoming Jobs is the site for Job services in Wyoming. When you log on you can do a search by town, occupation, pay, etc. It will show all the jobs listed at any town in Wyoming. But it doesn't list state jobs. Wyoming Jobs, State is the listing of State Jobs only.

Elkhunter gave you some great info on Sheridan (which is a beautiful town).

I live in Torrington, a town of 5,800 in the southeastern part of the state, and I'll try to answer your questions in the order you posed them.

1. We have a hospital which is run by Banner Health. They are ALWAYS looking for medical professionals. Their vacancies are listed in the "Wyoming at work" web site that Elkhunter gave you plus they have their own web site:

Wyoming Hospital Directory of Banner Health

2. Lake Guernsey and other nearby sites should satisfy your fishing needs.

3. You won't have any trouble finding a Wyoming town less than 60,000, since there aren't any cities over 60,000 anywhere in the state. If your wife is a power shopper though, she's gonna have to drive a bit. We're about 30 minutes from Scottsbluff NE, 75 minutes from Cheyenne WY, 2 hours from Ft Collins CO and 3 hours from Denver. Few women can out-shop my wife, though, and she's happy here.

4. Wyoming in general has fine schools in grades K-12, but the only 4-year schools in the state are tiny Wyoming Catholic College (which bases its curriculum on the Classics) and the University of Wyoming in Laramie. However, Wyoming does have good Junior Colleges, one of which Eastern Wyoming College here in Torrington. All Wyoming Juco's offer extension classes through UW, however, so it's technically possible to get a degree without leaving home. As a side issue you should Google the "Hathaway Scholarships" which the state grants to graduates of Wyo high schools.

5. If there's one thing we have , it's land. Goshen county (of which Torrington is the county seat) is twice the size of Rhode Island, but has a population of only 12,000. Finding a lot of ANY size is no problem around here.

6. Housing prices in Torrington are among the lowest in the state. You should be able to find a pretty nice home within your price range. (It's also a buyers' market just now, so make a low-ball offer-- it may well be accepted)

7. Crime is virtually unknown here. There was a burglary last week, which made front page news and is the talk of the community. There's also an occasional fist fight, and we have our share of drug use, just like everywhere else in the country.

There's a lot of info. including a series of "Community Videos" and links to local real estate and schools that you can peruse at

Torrington, Wyoming

Good luck in your search.

Casper is in the "heart of Wyoming" and is the home to Wyoming Medical Center (a level II trauma) and has the state's only Life Flight service. WMC offers a ton of specialties...neurosurgery, open-heart surgery, and on and on....our 14 bed ICU (where I work) is usually VERY busy....anything from traumas to open-heart patients to neuro patients from pediatrics to geriatrics. I know WMC is hiring RN/LPN and RRT/CRT and depending on experience pay is pretty good!

We are about 30 minutes to Alvoca Lake and about 1 hour to Glendo Resevior....but if fishing is your passion, there are a ton of rivers and streams to satisfy that.

Casper is about 60K people, both public and private schools (though we choose to home school our 4 kids). It's home to Casper College (a 2 year) but has a connection with the University of Wyoming in order to take classes through UW-CC.

Depending on the area of town you want to live in, $100-$300 is about right (probably more in the middle than anything). There really isn't a lot of "bad" areas of town, though I know people say to stay away from "North Casper" (that's anything north of the interstate).

We are in the process of moving to Gillette. It is growing fast due to the energy resources there. I've heard that they are crying for people in the medical field and that the local hospital is a very good one. Gillette is close to Keyhole Reservoir, a really nice lake, as well as not far from Lake DeSmet between Gillette & Sheridan. I'm a teacher and found that Gillette puts a lot of money/resources into it's schools and I'm exciting to be going to work there. So you might want to check it out~!

Cody has a strong medical community. We have a community hospital about the same size of Sheridan is very diverse in specialities. We ALWAYS have a long list of nurses needed at the hospital, private offices surgery center, substance abuse center, dialysis unit, cancer center, and outreach clinics (full time MD's) owned by Deaconess & St. V's out of Billings. And Powell is 22 miles away and has an outstanding smaller hospital but a larger geriatric base with a larger long term care center (I believe is larger - Cody hyas about 120 beds in LTC & I think Powell's is a little larger). We have Buffalo Bill Res that has a LOT of great fishing all times of year - GREAT ice fishing - about 8-9 miles out of town into the canyon towards Yellowstone. Ppl fish, water-ski, windsurf, dive, & any other water sport they are interested in - in wet suits because that is some COLD water all year long. Is a res on the Shoshone River that comes down from Yellowstone & flows way far & gone east but is great fishing clear down it at LEAST to the far side of town (runs right along the town border). We also have 5 other lakes within 3 miles of town (1 is actually within the limits). Property is expensive up here but we don't have the boom/bust thing many towns in Wyo have. BTW - West Park Hospital is no longer a JCAHO hospital (YAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!! I worked there for years & JCAHO is unmanageable in small hospitals). They are Planetree (spelling??) hospital certified, much more customer-oriented & fewer STUPID POLICIES that make no sense in a small hospital. I think they are still Quorum managed. They are currently buildling a new med office bldg about 3/4 of a mile from the hospital. Here are 3 websites that may help you find jobs in the area.
https://www.companyrecruiter.com/ass...Num=300094&S=C

Employment at West Park Hospital, Cody, Wyoming

Employment Opportunities

PVHC: Career & Job Opportunities

All of Wyo is desperate for nurses. Northwest College in Powell has what is now a very good nursing school so this area gets the new nurses who use it as a jump-off point. We need long-term experienced nurses who PLAN TO STAY. We don't have much shopping anywhere close here - Billings MT is closest - about 115 miles northeast. The last 11 miles or so is on interestate - the rest is 2-lane. thru several little towns in Montana (no real towns north of us to the MT border.

Hmmm. I wonder if I dreamed the two times that Life Flight took me from Sheridan to Billings.

And in Casper, just where does life flight take you?

Am wondering if they don't mean the only life flight that orginates in Wyoming. The ones in Sheridan have to come out of Billings to get you. But if Cheyenne has one too then they aren't they only one too.

Wyomama -- Sheridan Hospital is larger than Cody -- we are 88 bed where I think Cody is about 30, not that we ever have 88 beds used. Right now we are in a doctor shortage. Having a couple leaving and not any new ones coming in.
