I lived in Thermop for 13 years and the longer I was there the more I wanted to leave. Some people love it there and that's fine! It is great for some people. I did enjoy the hot springs and the river. But like most small towns, there are definitely cliques. There are a lot of retired people in Thermop and I found most of them to be very nice, kindhearted people. But there was a lot about the younger & middle aged people there that I didn't care for. It was much worse, people wise, than other small towns I've lived in in Wyoming. I won't go into detail as I could go on & on and I'm really not wanting to disrespect anyone who chooses to live there. It just wasn't for me. I have not missed it for a second.

Well, I live in Thermop, so let's see what I can answer. Here goes.

AGE SPREAD OF POP - A lot of older people, retired and such, but it's by no means an oversized nursing home.

WHETHER PEOPLE ARE FRIENDLY TO NEWCOMERS - They tend to be for the most part. I've met some of the nicest people ever, here. I've also met some of the worst. It also depends if you're prepared to take life here as it is, or if you want the people to accomodate themselves to you. They don't real well at that.

WHAT BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE LIKE - Can't tell you a whole lot about that. They do tend be quite involved in the community.

WHAT PEOPLE DO FOR FUN - Drink, go to Casper or Billings a lot, drink, go to the pools, drink. There is a movie theater in town. If you're into outdoor activities, there's lots of that.

WHETHER PEOPLE ARE CLIQUISH - Yeah, mostly. I've survived though.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROUPS AND THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARDS THOSE IN OTHER GROUPS - There's mostly the have's, the have-nots and the drugged out of their minds. The have's (and I mean the upper echelon, not the average middle class guy) don't have much to do with the rest of us. The have nots (middle class) tend to have not problems with other socio economic groups. The divisions in this town tend to be more social than socio economic.

HOW PEOPLE ARE TOWARD DIFFERENT RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS - Never noticed anything bad. Never noticed anything much at all.

WHETHER THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DRINK - I need a smiley that is busy rolling on the floor laughing. Short answer, yes.

WHETHER PEOPLE ASSOCIATE MUCH WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS - Most definitely! You kind of have to work to be hermit here.

Overall, I like it here. Most of the problems, you will find in any small town.

Well, I live in Thermop, so let's see what I can answer. Here goes.

AGE SPREAD OF POP - A lot of older people, retired and such, but it's by no means an oversized nursing home. Yes, Thermop is a retirement town for sure. I don't know the % of older people, but it is high.

I have to agree that there are some of the nicest people, yet some of the worst. It all depends on who you are, who you know, where you work, etc.

WHAT BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE LIKE - Can't tell you a whole lot about that. They do tend be quite involved in the community. There are a couple of families in town that own most of the businesses. They are nice people, but they are definitely there to make money, that's for sure. Some are so snooty that they would never allow the "common folk" to visit their homes. Other business owners are great and are very involved in the community, as stated.

WHAT PEOPLE DO FOR FUN - Drink, go to Casper or Billings a lot, drink, go to the pools, drink. There is a movie theater in town. If you're into outdoor activities, there's lots of that. I had to laugh at this one. Drink is for sure a big part of life in Thermop. You have to remember that a lot of the working men work in the oilfield, and although not all of them drink, a large number of them do and do it A LOT. The only things we did when we lived there was go to the pool to soak, go fishing, or stay home. We left town a lot to partake in outdoor activities, shopping, etc.

WHETHER PEOPLE ARE CLIQUISH - Yeah, mostly. I've survived though. I think they are very cliquish. My kids talked about it a lot in school. They even named all their little cliques (examples: the jocks, the preps, the hicks, the druggies)

This is very true. They turn their noses up to the average Joe's. The have nots (middle class) tend to have not problems with other socio economic groups. The divisions in this town tend to be more social than socio economic. I have to agree about the social divisions. Some people just think they are a lot better than others.

HOW PEOPLE ARE TOWARD DIFFERENT RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS - Never noticed anything bad. Never noticed anything much at all.People there are either religious and go to church regularly or they aren't religious at all. It's weird. I don't know of anyone that has problems with any particular religion.

WHETHER THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DRINK - I need a smiley that is busy rolling on the floor laughing. Short answer, yes.DITTO

WHETHER PEOPLE ASSOCIATE MUCH WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS - Most definitely! You kind of have to work to be hermit here. This isn't always necessarily true, but for the most part, everyone knows everyone else in town.

Overall, I like it here. Most of the problems, you will find in any small town.Yeah, most small towns have the same type of problems, but Thermop I found to be especially cliquish.

I'll add my take on what I thought the 13 years I lived there. I'll just post behind what inthemiddle said in a different color!!!!

Default Answers to questions:

Here are some answers to your questions.
Examples of what you may want to know:
Age spread of the population: Mostly older; Thermopolis has a lot of retiring population. As for younger populations-- the high school graduates about 60 kids every year, and young professionals (not sure what you call them ) aren't abundant but are there.
Whether people are friendly to newcomers: Generally people are pretty receptive to newcomers, mostly willing to help
What business people are like: They are willing to help--not sure exactly what is meant by this question.
What do people like to do for fun:Within Thermopolis there is not a ton to do, although they do have the mineral hot springs and large park, close by are a lot of outdoors activities including fishing, camping, hiking. The lake is about 15 minutes away.
Whether people are "cliqueish": As with all small places you will have this, so expect to see some of it although not sure I can account for it because I grew up there
Socio-economic groups of the people there and their attitudes towards those in other groups: SES varies widely, there is a pretty decent low SES, but not a lot of things that accompany the low SES (crime, etc.), and then middle class is pretty common. Generally everyone intermingles and least some
How people are toward various religious affiliations: Same as any other place
Whether there are a large # of people who drink, etc.: There are those that drink--not much else to do in a small town, but are also a lot of people who do not.
Whether people associate much with their neighbors: People are pretty friendly and watch out for their neighbors-depending on your neighborhood depends on how well you will get to know your neighbors.
Hope that helps!
