Thank you! I was starting to wonder if I've been away from Wyoming too long! I grew up in Wyoming, and I spent part of those growing-up years in Star Valley, and part of them in Pavillion, and although I didn't live in Dubois, I used to go through there alot, and the pronunciation you gave, was how everyone that I knew, said it. My husband & I were talking about it, last night, and although he didn't live in Wyoming a real long time, even he remembered it as DOO-boyce. (Funny, my son's middle name is Boyce! ). Anyway, thanks for clarifying, or maybe I should say, backing up, what I was remembering!

Default Dubois vs. Star Valley

I'd vote for Dubois... not quite as isolated. I don't want to sound "prejudiced" but you will be happier in Star Valley if you are Mormon. Western Wyoming is heavily populated by the LDS church folks. Nothing against them, just saying that you will "fit in" more if you are LDS. I think that Lander is better than both of them, but I'm biased having lived there for 9 years.

OOPS! Well, we have come back from our trip to WY and found a piece of property just south of Alpine. We found the Star Valley to be wonderful and very beautiful. And very, very friendly to us and we are not LDS. Plan to move within 12-18 months.Plus it's not THAT isolated.... But thanks, bobbymcsnoddy, for posting your thoughts!

I lived in Wyoming for 23 years, grad from U. of Wyoming in 1976, lived in the Jackson area for 17 years very familiar with both Star Valley and Dubois.

Star Valley is abit wierd cause of the Mormon factor as we considered it more like Utah than Wyoming. You do realize that for most of the state it is 100 miles between towns. You have to adapt and become pretty self sufficient.

I used to work for a contractor and we did alot of work in the Hoback Ranches. It's just a subdivison between Jackson and Pinedale except each lot has many acres. nothing special IMHO.

Best thing is to go and visit each area. From both Star Valley and Pinedale you are about 3 hours from the SLC area, Star Valley being closer, while Dubois is much more isolated. If you like mountain outdoor activites both Dubois and Pinedale have the Wind River range which is huge and amazing.

I wish you lots of luck! I, too, moved from Asheville, NC, and headed to WY. I was in Alpine (the fiance' owned a home there), Cody, and Story. What a coincidence! The Blue Ridge mountains are beautiful, but I was awestruck at the beauty of Alpine and the way of life in WY. I had no problems leaving Asheville behind. While it's a great town, there were too many negatives.

Best of luck!

Default small town-Alpine

Hi. I live 36 miles south of Jackson. I have a house for sale just out of Alpine.
Alpine is small town, 550 people. My house is out of town so you can have horses or a big garden. Highway 89 S is just down the road a ways. I don't get snowed in but we do get snow. It gets hotter than hell here in the summer cause it is high desert. Now if you are looking for trees and water and views, this is the place. Yellowstone is 100 miles north of me.
Jackson Hole is a tourist town and pricey to live there. I'm talkin half a million
for a small place with nothing extra.
If you send me your email I will send some pictures of what people come here for. The awesome beauty.
Oh, my house is on Remax and listed at $290,000.

Default Dubois Vs. Star Valley

Thanks for the offer.... but we already bought a piece of property (in April) in Etna that we intend to build a house on. It's small, just 2.33 acres but we are surrounded on three sides by a beautful aspen grove with an amazing open view to the north. It is everything we were looking for and more. Still I would love to see some of your photos! We need to sell our house here in Asheville,NC first before we make the move to Etna.Hope to be out there in a year. Sooner if possible.

Default Dubois or Star Valley?

Just curious, which did you choose? And, why? My husband and I toured both areas as well. Dubois won out. We found land 12 miles west of town...awesome views! We absolutely love it. We currently live in the very urban south. And, we can't wait for a change of pace. We've met some very nice folks there and town does provide the necessities.
