Homeschooling in Sheridan, resources??
My husband and I have decided to homeschool. Right now we just have our first daughter, Maddy, she is 2 and we want to homeschool in a year 1/2 or 2.
What resources are out there, anyone know of any?
Thanks a bunch

Glad you made it, welcome Home.
Here's the best place for home schooling. Just out of curiosity, why homeschool? We have excellent schools and a buss comes out and picks up your child every morning and drops them off every afternoon.
Anyhow, here's the best sight for home schooling.

Homeschooling can be fun!!
Hi, I don't live in Wyoming but, I home schooled my kids through grade school and one until, high school. I would suggest that you find something like K-12 or similar. One that you can have support with the curriculum if you have questions and they also, provide testing and keep track of grades. Just in case they decide to go to public school later.
Unless, you are educated in each subject it can get confusing. They put together all the curriculum that you need for each subject and you don't have to wonder if you are getting the right books. Good Luck it can be fun!! Remember Patience and lots of outdoors actives those are the most fun. Hands on science!!

Thanks very much for the information..
Jgussler, well I have heard the schools are excellant, and my husband's boss told us that also. My husband was homeschooled and I was public schooled. And together we decided to homeshool. Mostly for religious reasons, however being of public school background, I would like to get involved with a support type group of other moms that homeschool, and participate in field trips and other activities to help her get to know other children and interact ect.
I think that is great that the schools are really good here in Sheridan. I had friends in highschool that took a few classes at public school and the other 80% was at home.
It helps to know if we or our daughter ever wanted to take a few classes in town, that it is an excellant school.
Anyway, thanks for your link as well

I was just curious. Course, you'll have to get ahold of the school district to find out what activities your child can get in to so that he/she are socially active. Course, a good solid membership at the Local Y can do the same thing and also allows you and the other half a chance to enjoy it also.

How is the homeschooling going? My husband and I have also decided on homeschooling. He is now looking at a job in WY and I have not looked at the laws on homeschooling there. What do they require? I use to know the site that told you every states laws but have forgotten it. Did they allow your child to play sports with the public schooled children?

My wife was homeschooled, my brother was homeschooled, and I was a product of the public schools. Before we moved here we were 100% planning on homeschooling our kids, but we've heard great things about the schools here that now we're trying to decide what will be better for our kids - homeschool, or not to homeschool?
Kristynwy, like you we are wanting to homeschool for religious reasons. But I'm also very big on things like sports, music, 4-H...opportunities that are more available for public school students. So we have about 2 years before we need to decide which route is best for the kids. My oldest is 3. Both my wife and I turned out okay, and the school system here seems to be better than the school district I went to, and it was a pretty good one.
The Home School Legal Defense Association is a great resource for all things homeschool related. My wife was homeschooled using the Seton Homeschool curriculum. Not sure what denomination you'd be looking to use, if any, but Seton is a good Catholic one. A Google search came back with many different options.
Good luck!

We homeschooled due to several reasons, (living internationally, terrible schools in our area... not WY, way liberal agenda on the teacher's / union part, schools more interested in getting good scores (tutoring for tests) that in teaching basic content) but... as a family we volunteered in the public schools every week. It was a really good experience for our kids and a good way to stay engaged and support the public schools which often have very needy kids, many who have pretty poor family situations. It must have worked, as each of our kids were asked to be 'tutors' when they attended Jr College, instead of HS. That was a really good way for them to get a 2 yr head start on college (paid for by the state). They had to pay their own way through college so it directly helped them. I'm ole school (not into the US 'entitlement' program, of paying for kids college). They each had to build a house from scratch during HS, those were sold and invested in commercial props, so they have the dough to pay off their school loans if they want, but I hope they are smart enough not to pay off a 4% loan if they have a better plan.
There are lots of Homeschool resources, and the early yrs are pretty fun. I'd suggest taking a weekend trip to a Homeschool convention / resource fair, it will be a good education, but you will leave with a lot of questions. Each kid is very different so you need to nurture their interests and keep them engaged. I regret some of the mistakes that seemed to throttle creativity, so... I would do a very hand's on, activity based education, and less on the curriculum / schedule. (and Read, read, read) 4-H, animals, music, dance are very good, as the kids get into jr high they may want to be doing their own businesses. We had several in our Homeschool group who were employing each other and making over $10k in manufacturing, or electronic / tech sales or support / web design. A few of them kept their businesses going to support them while they were away at college! Our kids were never that industrious. I should have followed up on my threat of sending them to Dairy Farm Boarding school from age 13-18

I too was in public school... and I actively was involved in band ect... I would like our daughter to have the opportunity for sports, band ect too...
In fact right now I feel really bad, because right now it is just her and I haven't really made a solid friendship with any moms yet.
I am hoping to go to a church once we move to Buffalo, I have tried a few in Sheridan and they just didn't "fit" for us... if that makes sense... I haven't been to all of them, but I there are a couple in Buffalo I really want to try...
anyways.... I think my husband used Saxxon & Bob Jones curriculum.
Our Daughter is also 3 years old
I am doing flash cards with her right now teaching her objects and shapes and colors and she can count really well and say her ABC's.
But I am going to start a curriculum with her when she is 5 probably... and continue to do pre-k stuff while she is 3 and 4...
Best of luck to you on what you decide for schooling...
I know there is a pretty good size Home school group in Sheridan that meets, and I think the do field trips, sports, art, and other stuff together...
