The biggest issue in politics around here is not so much the party lines, but it is built on the "Good Ol' Boy" concept. It's not what you know, but who you know that gets you anywhere here.

As Far as living here and working here, well let's put it this way, I would seriuosly like to leave and find somewhere else to live. Don't get me wrong, it's a fairly friendly town and has a very low crime rate. Our biggest issues in crime is Domestic violence and DUIs.

Unless you are an outdoorsy type of person there isn't much to offer in the way of entertainment. Shopping sucks too.

There is no scarcity in finding a job around here, especially in the hospitality and constrction areas. Methane is also a big hiring spot right now. The cost of living is a little on the high side, especially in the housing area, that is through the roof. Average incomes can barely afford to live here.

Sheridan has excellent schools if you have school aged kids. That is one area I have very little to complain about. Biggest problem is the Superindentant.

Sheridan has become another Jackson Hole. Most of the folks moving here recently are the millionaires who can no longer afford to live in Jackson because the billionaires are taking that area over.

Biggest thing you should do is scope Sheridan out before deciding to move here. If you are used to having access to good shopping, plenty of non outdoorsy types of entertainment and a decent income in an overall affordable housing market, then Sheridan may not be right for you. Some of the highest wages are around $20.00 an hour with the overall average around $8.00-$9.00 an hour. This income average has gone up only because there is a high demand for employees and very few people still here willing to work. Those who are willing to work are already working. A lot of the abled working aged people have left for other areas. The average 3 bedroom home price is $300,000. Average rent for said home is around $1200 -$1500 a month. Decent shopping and non outdoor entertainment is about a 2 hour drive away.

If you are wanting to retire and have a decent retirement income and/or you are looking for a nice quiet spot to live that is slow paced then Sheridan may be what you are looking for.

Thank You,

Appreciate the insight and I had a feeling those pesky millionaries were coming to Sheridan sooner that later; hate $$$ overpopulation Great situation that you have in Wyoming, especially in spots like Sheridan, is that you have lots of room to roam and can find areas that are reasonably priced (away from the $$$) I suppose.

LOL, I can identify with the "Good Ol' Boy" syndrome, not fond of it, but I understand. It seems that's the lay of the land in smaller cities/towns in any state. Nevertheless, I look forward to visiting Sheridan, but I think when I strike up a conversation with a local I'll just say I'm from South Central L.A. It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction I receive!

You are welcome. Thing is, we have had those pesky millionaires coming to Sheridan for quite some time, it's just here lately there have been more than normal coming in. The Methane boom has helped with that and again the fact that Jackson is no longer affordable for them.

Yeah we have a lot of room to roam in the Sheridan County area, but they are not all affordable. Some of the more affordable places are Ranchester, Arvada/Clearmont and especially Parkman. The latter places are not as pretty unless you are into a deserty feel and lots of sagebrush.

If you come for a visit, you may not get a huge reaction just telling folks you are from South Central L.A. We are used to a lot of out of staters from CA and other larger metros. Plus who knows if you'll be talking to an actuall local, not with all of the newcomers moving in or following jobs. But if you did strike up a converation with a local, you would get a bigger reaction if you told them you are a tree hugging, vegitarian, enviromentalist, into gun control, extreme liberal. If you told folks that, you would even get a reaction out of the Dems around here. The Dems around here are more middle than left leaning. There are a few extreme left leaners, but folks just think they are nut jobs. Course they think that of some of the more extreme right leaners around here, even though the majority of locals think Rush Limbaugh is God and his word is gospel.

My husband asked me to check out Sheridan here because of yet another job opening! The past threads here have been very informative (thank you everyone). However, I have a couple questions:

We are tree-hugging, vegetarian, environmentalist, liberals...but not outwardly (meaning that we don't go spouting our views everywhere, just want to live our lives). Would we still be frowned upon a bit in Sheridan? Or if we respected others preferences, they would respect ours? Even if ours young sons, both vegetarians, are in the public school system?

Also, are there smaller towns close by? Especially any towns that we might fit into a little better, or have cheaper rent?

Thanks for any input...the positive part of all these job announcements is that I get to know different towns a little better (and states!).

As long as you respect others and their opinions, for the most part you would be respected as well. Just be careful who you do speak your opinions to, or you may end up with someone telling you, you are a kook or a lunatic liberal. As a general rule, no one really cares about the party affiliation of the folks around them, nor do they care what your beliefs are, that is unless you are a liberal and you start pushing your opinions and your beliefs. It's okay if you are a conservative pushing your opinions and beliefs, they do it all the time. I have just learned to keep my mouth shut for the most part unless they are parroting "Rush" trying to look like they are intelligent and they have no idea what they are really saying.

My one daughter has a kid in her class that is a vegitarian. No one really notices or bothers them about it. There maybe are a few kids who are curious as to why they only eat vegis and such and no meat, but as far as I know they are not harrassed by anyone because of it. The kid mostly brings a sack lunch, because of their diet, but occasionally they eat hot lunch. Nice thing about our school lunch program is, as long as the kid takes 3 food items that are on the menu, the school is fine with it. So your kid could take the vegis, the milk and the dessert and be fine.

Thank you very much for your input! It is good to hear about another vegetarian child in the school system. It is one thing to be an adult veggie, but sometimes people really over-react to children being one.

Your post has eliminated some of my concerns!

Crazy,
We conservatives might call you crazy, but we welcome most crazies.

I would be a little concerned that you kids might not be eating a proper balance of food and getting enough protein, but otherwise I'd rather have a tree hugger living next to me than not.

Most people I know are only conservative a little to the right of center or liberal a little to the left. The ones too far in either direction get rolling eyes from me, but that's about it. Heck, I'm even married to a liberal, and we get along great. I won't let her vote in the general elections, but otherwise....

Well I dont care about the dang politics situation......they will all do whatever they want to anyway. What I do care about is a couple things that were said......

1. Good schools for the kids. I even looked them up on Greatschools.net. Wow you all have awesome schools. My high school isnt even ranked on that list.

2. Jobs are available. That way I will be able to subsidize my military retirement and be able to live a little more comfortably, and afford a 4X4....LOL

3. Kinda goes with the one before, my military retirement should be enough to pay the bills by itself. Unless they change the system for us.

4. Friendly people. That is one of my biggest things I want. I hate SoCal with all the rude people all the time.

5. Right down the road from Sturgis, Big Horns, and Billings. Centrally located for my ideal situation.

6. It may be cold in winter, but that should keep the no gooders away more than a warm climate. Or at least lower the amount of them.

Sorry for the long post but just my .02 based on what I have been reading on here. And from when I stopped there a few years back doing a coast to coast Transfer.

Thanks for letting me take part in your forum here.

Gib

You are correct for the most part about most folks around here are more of the middle with only a slight leaning to the right or left. But I have seen the extreme on both sides, and most of the extremists I've ran into are far right leaners.

I am registered as a Democrat, but I don't vote straight party. I call myself a conservative liberal as there are issues on both sides of the fence that I agree with, I just tend to agree with more of the issues on the left side. The only time I lean more to the left than down the middle is when I get an earful of to much conservative bull and they start calling names or spewing things they know nothing about.

My husband is a Republican, and we too get along great. I try and encourage him to vote in general elections. I think that voting is a right we should all try and excersise no matter what party.

Wyoquilter sounds like one of the nice "locals" willing to help others. I do see that a lot in the Wyoming threads. A friend of mine is interested in the area, and now i might be too. I have been on the citydata for less than a month and really enjoy it. My friend might want me to join her up in the Wyoming area. I might get her on these threads to get more info. I have heard that housing has gone up. I will find out if my writing will support me, or if there is much work in Sheridan. Most of the time an older guy (55) has no chance against younger persons. You would think an employer would want some intelligence, experience, and maturity. I find they can be threatened by those of us with some experience and able to be intuitive. anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Thank-you for the nice comment.

It is true that housing prices have gone up here in Sheridan and in many places in WY where the booms have been hitting. Right now it's the winter months, so some house prices have leveled off or have come down a bit to keep them from sitting to long. But you will find that a lot of the homes that look like they are great deals will need a ton of TLC.

I think right now with the lack of employees we have here in WY a person of any age would be welcomed, if they are willing to work. An older person with experience may even have an advantage, as the bosses wouldn't have to spend a lot of time training someone.

What line of work are you in, or what line of work are you looking for? Right now in Sheridan we need employees in just about any field. Some fields have higher needs than others. Like for example, I think our police dept., teachers and nursing areas are in pretty good shape as far as employees. There are a few job openings in those areas around WY but not as many as say hotel help, cooks/wait staff, school bus drivers, construction, work in the methane ...etc.

By knowing what work you are looking for we can tell you where you would most likely be able to find that job.
