Sheridan: Good & Bad & Ugly
Afternoon all,
I'm new to this forum, but have reviewed the Wyoming threads extensively and have always enjoyed reading about Sheridan and other towns close by. I've never traveled to this beautiful town, but will very soon.
I'm inquiring from those that have been long time residents of Sheridan or the surrounding area what it's like to reside, play and work there. Also I'm aware, for the most part, people are people wherever you live, but are the people of Sheridan conservative, moderately conservative, lean a little left; I'm not one to make assumptions......
Thank You.

All of the above
It's WY, so will be a "bit" more conservative than, say, California for instance.
I'm finding what I'm looking for here........and leaving alone the things I don't want!

I was there early last month. Saw quite a few more Republican yard signs than Democrat yard signs.

Hello,
I currently live in Sheridan and have off and on most of my life. I would say that Sheridan is a bit more on the conservative side. It most definately has more Republicans.
The biggest issue in politics around here is not so much the party lines, but it is built on the "Good Ol' Boy" concept. It's not what you know, but who you know that gets you anywhere here.
As Far as living here and working here, well let's put it this way, I would seriuosly like to leave and find somewhere else to live. Don't get me wrong, it's a fairly friendly town and has a very low crime rate. Our biggest issues in crime is Domestic violence and DUIs.
Unless you are an outdoorsy type of person there isn't much to offer in the way of entertainment. Shopping sucks too.
There is no scarcity in finding a job around here, especially in the hospitality and constrction areas. Methane is also a big hiring spot right now. The cost of living is a little on the high side, especially in the housing area, that is through the roof. Average incomes can barely afford to live here.
Sheridan has excellent schools if you have school aged kids. That is one area I have very little to complain about. Biggest problem is the Superindentant.
Sheridan has become another Jackson Hole. Most of the folks moving here recently are the millionaires who can no longer afford to live in Jackson because the billionaires are taking that area over.
Biggest thing you should do is scope Sheridan out before deciding to move here. If you are used to having access to good shopping, plenty of non outdoorsy types of entertainment and a decent income in an overall affordable housing market, then Sheridan may not be right for you. Some of the highest wages are around $20.00 an hour with the overall average around $8.00-$9.00 an hour. This income average has gone up only because there is a high demand for employees and very few people still here willing to work. Those who are willing to work are already working. A lot of the abled working aged people have left for other areas. The average 3 bedroom home price is $300,000. Average rent for said home is around $1200 -$1500 a month. Decent shopping and non outdoor entertainment is about a 2 hour drive away.
If you are wanting to retire and have a decent retirement income and/or you are looking for a nice quiet spot to live that is slow paced then Sheridan may be what you are looking for.

Regarding play, the Big Horn Mountains are a nice place to go... We went there yesterday, to see the pretty autumn leaves, though there are mostly lush green pines. I think it's such a pretty spot, those Big Horn Mtns...

Good Luck and I hope that you find something. You wouldn't happen to have any experience in the electrical field would you?? Just curious my husband is part owner in an electrical company and they really could use some journeymen electricians. If you know of any that want to move out this way give a shout out.

Thanks wyoquilter for the info. I dont know anyone right off the top of my head that is looking for electrical work I wish I was an electrician tho sounds like a good opprotunity. I just had a phone interview with Rocky Mountain line systems and that sounds real promising, real nice people and sounds like good work. hopefully that will work out for me and the next thing will be to find a place to live lol hopefully that wont be to big of a problem either.
