Cell phones and coverage...especially in Gillette.
Howdy all. Just wondering who are some of the carriers whose coverage and service is dependable in the Gillette area. I currently have a nextel, and can see by their website this will not work for me when I get to town later this week. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Red

Alltel and Verizon are the two major carriers. Two new towers were just set up along interstate 90 between Gillette and Buffalo. (Kingsbury exit and Indian Creek exit) The service is great.

I have Verizon, and the coverage is OK. A local company called Union Wireless claims to have the best coverage in rural Wyo, but I don't know if that's fact or mere advertising.

Alltel has the best coverage in the rural west. That's not saying they're the best service, or the best support, or the best selection of phones. Just that they have more coverage across more small towns in the intermountain west. In some major cities, you might be roaming with Alltel.

I believe Verizon bought out Alltel and I think that the changes will be made in January. Someone correct me please, if I am incorrect.

I have Verizon and have had good reception with it in many parts of Wyoming, though not specifically in Gillette. The Nextel phone I carry for work didn't work in most of the parts of Wyoming I've been, including Gillette. At the time I was in Gillette with the Nextel, I didn't yet have Verizon coverage, so I can't comment on Verizon in that area.

We have Verizon and other than some spotty areas on our way between Billings and Gillette it works fine for us in Gillette. My son used to work for Alltel and said that Verizon & Alltel share their towers, so there should be no difference in coverage, other than the fact that different phones get better coverage than others.
