When I lived in Oregon, we always had either a wood stove, or a pellet stove hooked up to a generator for heat. In Oregon I have been with out power for weeks in snow and it is no fun. If a wind storm came blowing through, huge trees would get knocked down all over the place causing the power to go out. We'd get at least one a year.
I agree about burrying the lines. Makes things a lot easier.
Ya want to know something funny, when we first moved here we rented a trailer on a ranch. The lady said in her farm house, when we asked her what her back up heat was. She said nothing. All they had is propane furnace.
I thought hmm interesting... She said I've lived here 8 years and never lost power. That first year we lived there we lost power! lol...
What is going to happen I am afraid though one day, is she will get snowed in and lose power and have no back up. She doesn't even have a generator.
That is the drawback to renting our house right now, it is nice and keeps us warm, but I sure wish we had a coal/wood stove or a fireplace... If we own a home one day, we have a brand new wood cook stove in our storage that will be the first thing we install. But for now still renting... while the ecnonomy is the way it is..

I know what you are saying about having a back up heat source. When we first moved back to Sheridan we too lived in a trailer with no back up heat. Thankfully any power outages we experienced didn't last all that long. Now we have a house with a nice large wood stove. We don't just use it for backup in case of power outages. We also use it when we get blow zero temps. It helps off set the utility bills. Draw back is wood is so expnsive around here. I was really shocked at what a cord goes for. The last placed we lived they practically gave it away.
I found the best source for wood is getting in touch with a tree trimming service. Most of the time they don't care if you come and take the wood, it saves them from having to either put it through a chipper or haul it to the dump.

That is nice! I would use the woodstove all the time... Back in Oregon, our furnace hardly ever ran with our pellet stove or wood stove...
Have you tried getting wood up in the Bighorns? If you have a chainsaw, the permit is pretty cheap to cut wood I think? Just an idea

Yeah, I've wanted to go get wood out of the Bighorns. But there always seems to be a reason why we don't. 1) our truck wouldn't hold enough wood to make the trips up and back cost effective and 2) hubby still hasn't fixed chainsaw from when we lived in MT.
One reason we don't use the woodstove all of the time is it is in the basement and even though it does keep the floors for the upstairs warm, the main heat stays in the basement because of the way our house was built. We have a stairwell that acts like a chimney and all the heat that rises stays in it and doesn't spread out to the rest of the upstairs. We hope to remove a wall which would open up the stairwell, but the wall is load bareing so it would cost us quite a bit to do it. So because the heat doesn't really go up to well the basement gets way to hot and uncomfortable. My poor daughter would cook at night.

I figured after blaming Kristy for the negative, nasty weather, I would give a good, nice weather report.
It is a beautiful day though. Rain hasn't even come close to Sheridan.... yet.
