Missouri to Wyoming?
Hi! My husband and I are talking about moving to Colorado or Wyoming. He works in Wy 2 weeks a month on an oil rig and I am a stay at home mom. We live in a small town in central mo. We would love any information we could get on what are the good places to look at in Wy as far as cost of living and proximaty to shopping centers ( walmarts, targets..stuff like that, malls aren't too important.) Also where could we get the most "bang for our buck" perferably in the souther half of the state. Thank you so much for any help you can give!

I don't know too much more other than what's here in the Riverton area and a few places north. We're in the Central area, not southern, but I will say this is the most beautiful and friendliest place I have ever lived, and I love it here. It's a town of around 10,000, maybe a couple of hundred more adding the outskirts. We have a Walmart and Kmart, and all your basic fast food places. I also come from MO, Springfield, and although it's smaller by the thousands, I love it. Spfld will forever have a place in my heart b/c it's my hometown, but here is so much more. Where in Wyo does your husband work?

My husband runs a rig south of Baggs - working the two weeks on and two weeks off schedule. He made the trip to Arkansas for a period of time. The problem will come in the winter time when travel by car or air gets dangerous. When you are required to be somewhere on a certain date - life gets tricky. Sadly a couple of guys have lost their lives getting in hurry to catch a plane. So if your husband is going to work in this area I highly recommend the move you are considering since you are not locked into a career in another area.
We have a home in Rawlins. No Wal-Mart or Target. I order online from Target and things get here really fast. Housing prices here have dropped. I really like this town - it's small but great community and schools. There are small stores here that carry almost everything you need. Casper is maybe 100 miles away and has lots of shopping.
Rock Springs is a lot larger town than Rawlins. It has a Wal-Mart and many more stores. Lots of traffic - the town is really growing. Your cost of living is going to be about the same (IMO) in both of these towns.
There is housing for the hands in Wamsutter. It may be cheaper - I really do not know - but you don't want to live there.
Good luck.

Thank you both for the info.
I live around Fort Leonard Wood, so no too far from Springfield. I do love the area here but my husband has been working in Wy for almost 3 years now and we would like to be closer. It would be Alot cheaper on gas. He works in the Marbleton area.
He has driven through Rawlins and says it's nice, I will have to check out the houses online.
Thank you both again for your help!

The next time your husband drives through Rawlins have him pick up the local paper. It isn't online and I have noticed a couple of for sale by owner signs. Prices have dropped here in the last month. Good luck.

I spent my 1st 18 years in northern WYO (Sheridan) and I love that place (I now live in VA) and know all of Wyoming quite well. If you are looking to stay in the southern part of the state be warned that you will have wind more days than it rains in Seattle!!!
Cheyenne (our capital) is in the SE corner and has all the amenities of a large town/super small city, but I think there are prettier places to live. Though Cheyenne is really close to CO, and all that Denver has to offer. 3 beds/2 baths in Cheyenne will run you btwn 200 and 250 (generally).
If you want to try small town living than Torrington is full of wonderful and friendly people (though the new state prison is going there...has it opened yet?) but it is quite small. A 3 bed/2 bath home here goes for around 190.
Douglas is a nice town. The cool thing about Douglas is that the WHP trains there, so there is a big law enforcement presence there. A 3 bedroom 1 bath home here goes for about 215
Laramie, where UW is located has the college town atmosphere, and I like that place. Your 3 beds/ 2 baths will cost you in the 300's it appears.
Of course I'm partial to Sheridan, but that is the far north of the state, and I'm not sure where your hubby works and how much he would want to commute. The cost of living is going up in Sheridan, because the billionaires are moving into Jackson and forcing the millionaires out, and they are coming to Sheridan. Sheridan is a bit less than 20,000 and has a nice Wal-Mart a fun downtown and a GREAT school district. Plus it is at the foot of the BigHorn Mountains!!! A 3 bedroom, 2 bath house on almost an acre of land in Sheridan goes for about 180.
I hope this helps! Good luck on all your decision making. Let me know any other questions, I love to talk about my home state!!! Happy December.

Thank you armypoohfan, that was alot of helpful info. He works 2 weeks on and 2 off. So right now he is driving 18+ hours just to get to work. anything would be better than that. (He works around Marbleton) He would love to buy a house w/ acreage for a great price. It's crazy the price difference for the amount of house you get from state to state. Anyway, I really appriciate the information!
