Possible relocation to Laramie, housing?
Howdy all,
I'm from NW Missouri and had looked at relocating to WY first but housing scared us away, so we looked at TX, but I will be going to Laramie in Jan. for an interview and wanted to know about rental housing. I'm married with 3 kids. I would need to sell my house here before I could buy so I would need a rental. Any advice on that?
I know TX and WY are extremes as far as geography goes, but we have some family around those areas, my mom lives in Denver. Thanks for your help.

ok after searching I found a link to the Laramie paper and while there are not a great amount of rentals there are a few and the person talking to me about the job says after graduation, rentals are more plentiful.
My wife is very community oriented, participates in school functions, church events etc. What types of community organizations are there for moms. How are the local churches? She goes to a Disciples of Christ church which is a non denominational type are there any of those types up there? Thanks in advance

We were going to move to Laramie, too for my husband's job. We're from TX (currently in Houston). We, too, found rentals difficult, especially those that allow pets. We have dogs, and giving them up was not an option for us. We were looking around the summer time, when rentals were plentiful because of the University on summer break. However, finding a house that was spacious for 3 kids and pets was almost impossible. Apparently when rentals (good ones with yards and such) come up, they go quickly, like in hours we were told. Staying plugged in to the Laramie Boomerang is good, as well as craigslist. There are starting to be more and more rentals advertised on craigslist. Another option is to get in touch with some of the property management companies in town and put feelers out with them.
Housing is higher up there than here in TX, but the taxes are much less than here, too. We fell in love with WY but it wasn't our time to go. So, in the meantime we dream and hopefully we will be there in the next year or so. FINGERS CROSSED!
As far as community organizations-I know the schools are supposed to be excellent, and there is a pretty great library in town, so perhaps that would be a good resource for your wife. I'm a stay at home mom, so looking for things with other moms was what I was looking at when we were looking in Laramie.
Good luck! What co. are you looking to work for?
It is a great little town. I think you'll like it.

Well I'm pretty excited about it. I've heard and read great things about Laramie and WY in general. The only thing is housing but I noticed there are still a few places. We also need a place that is pet friendly and that is a tough find. If we could sell our darn house we would be able to buy. The interview is for WyoTech by the way.

First of all good luck on the interview. I can't really help on the whole housing end of things, but just wanted to ask what position you would be going for at WyoTech? I am just curious is all. I have been in the auto upholstery business for years and was able to go to Laramie to interview with them about the upholstery instructor position. Unfortuanatly, the job was basicly offered verbally and I asked for a written job offer before deciding anything. Almost imeadiatly afterwards, the school was seeing their enrollment numbers dropping just enough to not need to hire anymore night guys. I recently spoke with them again though and the offer is still a good one once numbers increase again.. were waiting on Janurary now.
Of course who knows???
But if you've yet to see the campus and town, I think you'll really like it... I know I did. My hardest part will be getting my wife on board with the cold and wind!
Good Luck!

Well the position is for the Diesel Technology. We are going to drive there (we live in Missouri) and should arrive Jan 8th and will leave on the 10th, and shoot down to Denver to visit family on our way back.
I told my wife that the majority of posts on here were about the wind. Last week we had a few days with 40mph winds and I told her, get use to it, thats probably how it is all winter long. It was pretty darn cold here yesterday, 6 degrees F with windchill at -20.
Speaking of this, does anyone know what the weather is generally like around the first half of January, as far a driving goes? The almanacs show cold with a little snow, but historically in the last few years have the interstate or hwys been open?

Road closures aren't exactly rare, but it's not the norm. They can close anytime during the winter months (Sept-June). It is rare that they're closed for more than 24 hours at a time. January is usually the coldest month, but not the snowiest.

Thanks for that info, I suspected that was the case according to the farmers almanac.
