Default Looking to Relocate

My family is looking into relocating to Wyoming. My husband's family is in Green River/Rock Springs area. I dislike the area (too dessert-like). I am interested in a small town (approx 2,000-5,000) that is near (30-60 miles) a city with a good sized hospital. I would probably be the main source of income working as a registered nurse. I would like the town to be fairly scenic or at least close to mountains and kid-friendly. I love pine trees and greenery.

I do not know if such a town exists. I know that a large portion of Wyoming is flat. Please offer any suggestions.

Janis

I can vouche for Sheridan, Buffalo, Ranchester, Story, Banner, and that area. Beautiful mountains just west of those towns. Fairly mild as far as wind and weather goes. Sheridan has a nice hospital and a great VA and both are always looking for health care professionals. Lot's of clinics, cancer treatment, mental facilities in Sheridan. Even if you were to live in Buffalo, your only talking 32 miles of commute.

Janis,
Have you looked into Wheatland? It has about 3500 people, and is home to Platte County Memorial Hospital. It is about 68 miles north of Cheyenne, arguably the largest city in Wyoming. Other nearby communities also have medical facilities, such as Torrington (Torrington Community Hospital) and Douglas (Memorial Hospital of Converse County). Wheatland also has the Laramie mountains just to the west, topping out at 10,262 feet, at the summit of Laramie Peak. There is a fair amount of greenery in town, with many of the streets having old growth trees lining them. The surrounding area is fairly dry, but still very beautiful. The biggest drawback that I know about in the area is the wind in the winter time. From what I know of Wyoming, though, this is normal in many parts of the state.

Lander, Riverton, Douglas, Have alittle more people than your looking at. But are good towns to raise a family. Decent hospitals, mountains and greenery.

I 2nd Sheridan, It's a world of difference from Rock Springs, GR.

(I'm with you...give me at least a shade tree) But proximity to beauty and a community that more represents my values, would be Sheridan or Powell.

Default Looking to Relocate in Wyoming

Thanks for all the input. I will look into Sheridan area. It would be close to my brother in Butte, MT.

Having spent nine years in Wheatland I would highly recommend it. My Dad is still there and I suspect we will retire there. There is definitely a need for nursing there and Cheyenne is not far away. We'd move now if we could but kids are still in school.
Research real estate carefully, particularly water availabilty. Sheridan is beautiful but the cost of living is MUCH higher.

Talking The big debate...GreenRiver or Rock Springs..

Well.. I'm moving my family out there to Green River Wy. I will be working in the electrical field (Industrial Elec) I think in all the plants & new plants that are going up. They've told me that they have work contracts for longer than 3 years. The contractors are hurting for people so bad, its like they're having bidding wars.

Wondering if anyone else sees this or weither this isolated? Also wondering if anyone might be able to help a family of 4, find a house. My wife is a massage Therapist with 8 years of healing people under her belt ... Is there Any where she might be able to put her talents to use...

Cant wait to get there and start livin.

Clamper3,

You're going to have a better chance of buying a house around here GR/RS than you will renting, especially if you want something in a decent safe neighborhood. The Escape Day Spa in Rock Springs needs a good massage therapist, in my opinion the only decent one they had quit due to medical reasons. There are several other massage places here also, I'm sure she could find a good fit somewhere. Be aware of the commute between RS/GR in the winter though, you'll want to ask someone about the old highway which is not much more than a dirt road, but only take that if you have four wheel drive. The interstate between is surprisingly icy and windy in the winter sometimes and when a wreck occurs you're stuck sitting on it until they get it cleaned up, this can take a very long time.
I'm curious if you really know what you're in for in terms of "living in the middle of nowhere" since you're coming from CA??
Have you been here for a visit?
