The brothel was known as the "Yellow Hotel". If you Google that and "Lusk" you'll get some hits.

JOHN BAYNE is on a distinguished road
My grandpa Joe Traphagan moved into a house a street down from the old yellow house that was a former brothel...I was always out on the ranch in Lance Creek, but used to go through Manville, small town...very small..on the way to Lusk. We normally did our shopping in New Castle, WYO.
My grandpa knew of the madam personally, and thought highly of her...for what it is worth.

That's very Interesting, Mr. Bayne.
I have several questions about Ms. Burke. I'll post it in a new thread, for topic-relation issues. I'll keep checking this however, for anyone who has any more information on Manville/Lusk itself.

Diana Knowling is on a distinguished road
Hi! My hubby and I recently purchased a thirty five acre tract of land near Lance, Creek...it borders state land and is referred to as Cedar Creek Ranch. I lived in Montana on a ranch ( raised ) for thirty nine years and have always wanted to live in Wyoming...it has been my deam state...for many reasons...I have raised and ridden horses all of my forty three years plus I love the wide open spaces and " working man " independent thinking of. I am trying to get as much information on Manville, Lance Creek and Lusk that I can before we go back again. I am an English teacher by trade and have taught in rural schools...anything and everything interests me from this area. Thankyou.

Compared to most places in the region the southeastern part of Wyoming, except in the mountains gets little snowfall. Click the link and check several diferent years and you will see this bears out. Sure, the wind blows especially in the winter so a blizzard is not uncommon but the Lusk/Manville/ Van Tassell areas do not usually experience deep snowpack all winter long.

You are however, looking at one of the busiest area in Wyoming for tornados.

Kinzie Kettler is on a distinguished road
Hi,
I don't know if you still need information about Manville, WY or not. My name is Kinzie Kettler. I am the grand daughter of Jack Kettler, the former mayor or Manville for many, many years. Kettler is a "big" name in Manville. Let me know if you are still looking for information or not.

Manville has a new post office, a church, 3 Sister's truck stop that has an all you can eat lunch buffet on Sundays. The old post office had 1 holding cell for those that were arrested. It was a town that was established because it is literally right next to a railroad track. There is an abandoned hotel (The Kettler Hotel). It is two story hotel, the lower level is a garage with an office and the upstairs has about 10 hotel rooms with rickety floor boards and tar hanging throught the ceiling. A man commited suicide in his hotel room, the bullet went through the walls and nearly got his wife that was in the community bathroom. There is a merchantile building with an hand crank elevator. There is an abondoned school, two story that once schooled K-12. There is a silver water tower. And, that's about it.

There is a book written about Manville but I wasn't able to find it on Barnes and Nobles website.

I don't know any legal things about using names, the Kettler name that is. Hope this isn't too late. I am hoping to hear from you. If you do write the book and it is published I would sure be interested in reading it.

Why don't you come for a visit and check out other small towns in the area for yourself? I live west of Lingle. Ft Laramie is a very small town and it has several interesting spots that could fit into your story. A lot of history too.

My response is intended to help you gain some research skills so you can find these kinds of information easily for yourself in the future.

You can find some relevant demographic census data about Manville on the Wiki:
Manville, Wyoming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

- How long would it take (ordinarily) to drive from Manville to Cheyenne? Use Google Maps and type in Lusk, Wyoming. When Lusk shows up on the map click on "Get Directions", and type Cheyenne, WY in the "A" window. Google maps will show you route and tell you how many miles it is and how long it usually takes to make the drive. You can see from the map that there are only about a dozen or so short streets.

If you switch Google Maps into Satellite view you will see the town is sparsly populated with houses and structures, only a few on each block. If you zoom all the way down into "Street View" the map changes into a virtual reality camera view and you can move back and forth down the streets, like you are taking a walk and see what the houses and structures look like. There is something titled "3 Sisters Truck Stop" on the north edge of Manville.

- Is Manville remotely like the town described above? If not, do you have another suggestion? Most small towns are like what you describe.

- Is there a lot of flooding? Drought? Snow Storms? Lightning? More often cloudy or sunny? Any other weather info. Not many places flood in Wyoming, its an arid state with low rainfall. If you go to the City-Data data pages you can look up almost any town/city in the US and get detailed information about weather history, as well as other demographic data such as crime rates, businesses, race, industries, employment, etc.

Unfortunatly, Manville is so small the data for it is not available yet on City Data so I went to the neighboring Lusk for the following.

- Are there any stores, diners, convenience stores or other public areas inside the town? In Google maps if you click on the "more" button and check "Photos" it will show you links to photos that people have posted of the area. While looking at the Lusk map if you type words like "Food" in the window where you previously typed "Lusk, Wy", Google will give you a list of places you can get "Food" as well as links on the map showing you where they are located. You can also type in key words like "Police", "Rental", "Apartment", "medical", etc. for similar results.

- On average, is each residential lot large or small? The City-Data data page will show you the "House Values Distribution", a graph of the number and value of houses in town.

- What would the main source of income be for a single mother? Apparantly there is a the "3 Sister's Truck Stop" in Lusk, and using the "key words" tip above will give you an idea of what kinds of businesses there are in the area, mostly in Lusk.

- Child Care services available? More likely a formal day care, or an at home babysitter? Google Maps will show you that there is at least one child care business in Lusk. But in small towns child care is often more along the lines of "baby sitters" or another Mom who will take care of another child that parent is at work. Or they go to daycare in Lusk while Mom or Pop are working in Lusk.

- Which school do the children attend? WHich town is it located in? Google maps will show you that there are 9 facilities related to schools in Lusk but none in Manville, so the kids are probably bussed to Lusk.

I hope this gives you some ideas on how you can research a lot about an area using the internet tools.

Does everybody realize the the OP's question was back in January? It's almost a year old. Also, the OP was last on the system in Feb of 09. She's never been back.
