I live in Fort Collins and have commuted/worked in Wyoming for almost two years now, without ever receiving a ticket for not having registered my vehicle in Wyoming, and I have been pulled over for speeding one time. I have a co-worker who made the same commute for a long period of time, received numerous speeding tickets, and has never been ticketed for having her vehicle registered in Colorado. The commute is tolerable, especially if you like books on tape. My mother works at the Department of Transportation in Cheyenne, so I will have to ask her if she knows more about the registration question.

Interesting, georgiainmt. I wonder if briebo1 was in a company truck rather than a personal vehicle.

When I first moved to WY nearly 20 years ago, it was like the 5th month I'd been here before I got pulled over. Polite Laramie Sherriff gave me a warning, but said he's cruise through my work parking lot the following week to be sure I plated my car.

IMHO, I don't think that if you work in WY for a few hours or even a few days that you should have to get WY plates. Personal opinion, but that is ridiculous....not very neighborly since other states don't require it.

Few years back, our local town cops were giving speeding tickets through town to only out-of-staters.......even though locals were speeding too. One speed-limit sign into town was hard to see under a blossoming tree. Cops didn't care. Word got out and tourists and Sturgis-goers started bypassing our town. There is definitely a difference between "legality" and "reality".

When we run tripple plates it was because we run back and forth. The big thing was that we had to be plated, "where the vehicle was kept at night." Trouble was, we'd be in South Dakota for 2 weeks, Wyoming for a week, then Montana for a month, back in Wyoming for 3 weeks, etc...

At that time you had to plate within the first 30 days of employment. In other words, if you moved into Wyoming and didn't find work for the first 5 weeks, found a job, you then needed to plate within the next 30 days.

We would set up a bone yard (where all the equipment and parts were kept) and that's where we would park. When we set the bone yard up, a HP would cruise our parking lot and write down plates. Then, 30 days later, he'd cruise it again and compare his list and then they'd ticket those of us that were not plated. So, to avoide tickets we'd plate right away, and because we shuffled back and forth, we kept plates on the vehicles so we ended up with 3 state license plates on each vehicle.

When I moved back to Wyoming after the service, I replated and then went to switch over my drivers license. I was told that my drivers license was fine until it expired and didn't need to be changed, even though it was from another state. I went ahead and switched it anyhow so I would have local ID.

Colorado is just as aggressive about out-of-state plated vehicles looking like they are working in the state.

That's not a new policy, either. I got harrassed over this and had to get Colorado plates all the way back in the 1960's as a student at CU with a part-time weekend job at Villa Italia in Lakewood. The cops did the same thing on a daily basis that EH says they did in WY ... do a parking lot check, write down the license plates, and ticket those plates that were there again. They ticketed me the 2nd weekend I was at Villa Italia for not having Colorado plates ....

Sunsprit, I'm sorry for your CO experience. I go back regularly, spend weeks at a time with relatives, often at shopping centers many days in a row and thank goodness I haven't had any police contact inquiring about my WY plates. Did a short-term stint in grad school in Ft. Collins and again, luckily wasn't required to get local plates.

I've traveled from Greeley to Cheyenne just for fun numerous times and while the traffic can sometimes be annoying in the FoCo area, I love the trip. Relaxing, somewhat scenic for a desert climate, and Cheyenne is just a beautiful little city. Yeah gas is getting pricey again but I'd say it'd be worth it. Maybe you could consider a half-way point like Wellington?
