Oh did I mention there are over 45 Realtor's here. The greed is growing like fungus. No matter how hard we try we just can't run away from it. I think it's become a national sickness.
I lived in Cody for a quite a few years before seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and moved to Montana. There were always a higher number of realtors there than just about anyplace in the state. Figured as their jobs in other fields dried up (oil) they'd turn to real estate. Cody has it's dark side easily seen at the city park most any evening - right down the street from the police station. Health facilities continue to get better there, but it's still lacking a trauma unit. Every trauma case goes to Billings. The reason they have so many activities for the kids now, is because the jail would be full every weekend otherwise. Cody has had its ups-and-downs, but mostly the 120 days of tourist activity is what keeps them alive.

I liked Lander much better. More conservative, fewer kalis - colder too.

[Mod cut]. I don't know what this poster's problem is; he's posted the identical thing on other threads. I suspect he couldn't make a living here, so now he's resentful that other people can.

Lander is very pleasant. It's a smaller city, but there's excellent shopping in Riverton. I suspect it is less windy than Cody, but has more snow. South Pass City and environs are a short drive. I know that most of the locals are conservative, but Lander unfortunately houses the Outdoor Leadership School, which is decidedly not. Talk about outsiders who want to change things.

I've lived outside of Cody for two years and have seen no evidence of an increase of big box stores. Wal-mart and K-mart have been here for years; and that's it. It would be really nice to have a Petsmart, but really very unlikely. There's no chance of a Lowe's or Home Depot. On the other hand, the only remaining small town, Mom and Pop predator store that I know about is the local dry cleaner. Thankfully, groceries and most common necessities are available at the same prices as the big cities.

If anyone wishes to start a business here, I know that another dry cleaner would do very well. Competition might make the original place lower their prices, but there are a lot of people here who do not like them.

We could also really use a coffee shop that allows smoking. There are certainly enough smokers here. Right now the only eateries that allow smoking are the Irma Hotel and the Silver Dollar Bar. There are are a couple vacant restaurants in town, so there's no problem finding a place. This would be guaranteed success.

Certainly presumptious of you. Actually I operated my business there for 12 years leaving in 2000 and made a fair living. Always had a second job tho, because food and gas prices were high at the time. Our company installed many of the septic tanks in the county along with my SIL who is a master carpenter. Wages then were about $6/hr - and a finish carpenter was worth $7.

I guess Peter's is gone? We used to hang there or at the Irma every morning.

I think what pushed us over the edge was when the Kody Kops busted a kegger that everyone knew about held on private property with adults in attendence, yet ignored the meth lab on the Powell Hwy.

Or maybe it was when a Casper cop busted his own niece for having a mix-drink toast at her wedding!

Drugs found there way into the area with the influx of Mexicans coming to work under a USDA work program in the mid-90's. Meth labs sprouted up everywhere and no one was immune to its strangle-hold. Several neighbor friends (and friends of friends) ended up in Billings re-hab because Wyoming hospitals had no room for them. Previous to that time, it was drug traffickers bringing product thru the state, getting lost in the Park and making a bee-line for the SD border, who would be stopped by WHP and arrested.

I don't know when you lived there, but you might remember hearing about a judge and prosecutor who were arrested for possession or the maybe the Bost case.

Before calling me or anyone else a liar, check your facts. You can ignore the truth if you want to, just don't shoot the messenger.

I grew up outside of Cody and with my Dad managed his farm until the mid-80's when we moved on to GA. Water is an alway present problem. You need to remember that the state is semi-arid plains plateau with a mountain range running SE to NW. Because of oil well fields petering out the refined practice of "fracking" has taken it's toll on area water wells. Pavillion is having this problem right now, as did property owners near Gillette and Powder River basin.

Water is never a given. Wyoming runs 10-12 years in drought and one to three flush. City water is available, but only up to the town limits. Irrigation water is available to everyone that pays for it. We drank irrigation water for years - chlorinated of course.
