Just got back from my Cheyenne visit!
Thanks to those who gave me suggestions about Cheyenne visit. I drove from Denver to Cheyenne on Thursday, spoke at a conference, and drove back Friday.
The drive from Denver to Cheyenne wasn't bad - but the drive from Cheyenne to the Nebrask border was beautiful. Coming from NC, we don't have the rolling plains like that and I really loved the peacefulness of the area and the lack of people.
I was surprised how small Cheyenne is - someone told me only 40,000 people and WY is the 2nd least populated state. WOW!
The people were so very friendly and welcoming!
Dining options outside of chains, as I was warned, are pretty close to nill. I was staying at the Plains Hotel which looked neat from the outside and in the lobby, but my room was very disappointing. However, I did sleep really well I have to say. The restaurant was pretty good. I got the chicken pot pie, but they need to have a sign saying that ballcaps are not allowed. I was annoyed to be in a place that was sorta-semi-nice and the guy in the booth across from me had a camaflauge ball cap on....
Also didn't realize how windy and dry it would be. Really, really, dry! However, I got a chance to go look at the wind farm out Happy Jack (?) Road. Those giant windmills are really COOL!
Thanks again for the info before my trip and I look forward to coming back sometime!

Actually, Cheyenne is vastly larger then that, the population is approaching 55,000 now! And Wyoming is actually the least populated state in the country.

Don't think you'll find a sign like that anywhere in Wyoming. I had the same hang-up when I moved here from CO nearly 16 years ago. My now-hubby would wear his hat at the table in a restaurant while we were dining, and it annoyed me. I asked him to remove it, and he thought I was insane. Now that I've been here for a bit and understand the culture, it isn't such a big deal.

You haven't been in the west if you don't see a man in a ball-cap. My husband wears one everywhere but church and his job. It's just a comfortable thing that midwestern men do. They aren't hicks. It's really no different than a woman wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt when she is on casual time.

Why do people wear ballcaps in cowboy country?
Wouldn't cowboy hats be more appropriate? They certainly look nicer.

That made me laugh! I don't think that is a factor for many men. It's more like their favorite or the latest one they have been given. My husband has ball caps in every condition. He has cowboy hats in every condition also. I think the one closest is the hat that gets picked more than "hope I look nice"!
He takes his hats off when we go out to eat if he is wearing dress clothes. He leaves his hat on in a bar. Hat off in church and at my Moms house. Hat and boots off in bed!

South Dakota is similar to Wyoming in that regard. Many men, especially younger men wear caps. In the town of 2,000 that I live in, it is a common sight for men in their 20s along with high school boys.
I have been to Cheyenne and the people are decent but is not the hustle bustle of the more populated areas. But that is not bad neither.
Do men in Wyoming wear ball caps of sports teams or general ball caps similar to what truckers wear or both? I sometimes wear my cap, which is usually on that of a sports team such as the St. Louis Cards or the Broncos.

I think most guys wear whatever is given to them. It's a popular giveaway for all kind of businesses. They call it advertising.
That reminds me; my son was going to give me one for a golf tournament he sponsors.... Phone call time.

I see that up in SD also. When I go through Wyoming, I will have to wear my cap, even if it is a professional sports team.
My grandpa in Colorado wears caps all of the time and some of them are downright funny. The political ones are funny (too right-winged on the propoganda for my tastes, but still humorous).

When I'm in Texas I see men wearing cowboy hats, but I don't recall them every wearing them at the table. I've always thought hats at the table was bad form. But if you're saying this is standard in Wyoming, well, I guess you *all* can't have bad manners!
I still don't like it....here in NC we call them rednecks.
