Where in Wyoming?
My wife and I are contemplating moving to Wyoming in a couple of years. I want to start the research now. We now live in a small mountain town in No. Calif. with pines and lots of snow. We love this kind of living but hate the politics and taxes in this state. Where can we find similar living in your beautiful state (without the high costs associated with the Jackson Hole area)?

I'll be first: Lander, Dubois, Cody, Buffalo, and Sheridan are the first that come to mind. You might consider Sundance and Newcastle in the Black Hills region. Maybe Alpine SW of Jackson?

As a general area, the whole Star Valley ... the region south of Jackson through to Afton, might qualify for your needs, or towards Bondurant.
Also, heading West from Cody towards Yellowstone might work, too.
Hulett ... Alva area would also be nice.
The South Medicine Bow mountan area, SW of Laramie ... starting around Woods Landing and up into the Snowy Range mountains, over to Saratoga ....
A lot will depend upon how remote/isolated/independent you want to be from shopping, commercial support (banks, etc.), medical facilities, how much "winter" you want to have, and your access to outdoor recreation (downhill skiing, hunting, fishing, equine activity, etc.) ... and your budget.
A great deal will depend upon your desire for acreage as opposed to a few acres with municipal services.

I should have mentioned Story, WY, halfway between Sheridan and Buffalo. It probably fits your description better than any of the others I mentioned -- lots of tall pines, a nice little mountain stream flowing through it, plenty of snow, etc. It doesn't offer much in the way of services, but Buffalo and Sheridan are only 20 miles away.

We are interested in a couple of acres with pines and water nearby. We don't need to be too isolated. Just a nice quiet, beautiful area. We enjoy downhill skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, and kayaking. We would like a few amenities nearby. Maybe a small grocery store and gas station. As it is right now we drive an hour and fifteen minutes for a once a month, major grocery shop. Not a problem. We get on average between 3-10 feet of snow and the temperatures range from the low teens to the 80's in the summer. Also we are thinking retirement so a lower cost of living area thats nice. Thanks for any input.

I would recommend looking into Story,Wy, not to far from Buffalo or Sheridan, that both have amenities. Sheridan has more...
But it fits a lot of what you are looking for...

Thank you all for the input. The town of Story is definitely at the top of my list of places to look at. I also read good things about Lander and Buffalo although housing I guess would be a little challenging to find.

Living in Story would also put you about equal distance away from 2 ski areas. Antelope Butte and Big Horn Ski area, both on the western slope of the Big Horns. Sadly, both of these areas were closed this past season. Big Horn due to EPA and other violations, and Antelope Butte has been closed for the past 6 year or so. I believe I heard in the news of an effort to try and reopen Antelope? I sure hope so. I'd also put Shell and Ten Sleep on your list, as they're only 20 minutes or so away from these ski slopes...

I would have to agree with Story. I would give it a thumbs up. Although, if I had any option in the world... It would be Alpine. I just love that little area.
I guess it depends on your financial situation.
Where abouts are you from in N Cali? I have family I have never met, but the live in Coarsegold.
I was born in Riverside, CA. Visited all parts of Cali through out the years. Still, I couldnt think about living in any other state but Wyoming.
