Default people who look for real estate from out of town...

I am just wondering- when people are looking for real estate from out of town- or even in town- do you look in the local newspapers for ad? I am wondering if newspapers are 'obsolete' due to the computr age.
Local realtors have said they no longer advertize in the paper 'because nobody ever looks at a paper anymore'.
I would think that a person who has come to the city to look, would pick up a paper- or maybe I am just out of touch??

There are many ads each sunday and at least a few each day for realtors sellings. I went online and found hundreds of houses here in Casper. Just have to keep up with it. Right now housing here is going down, and will stay down for many years. Others say for just "awhile". However long that is.

I couldn't tell you the last time I touched a newspaper... oh, wait, it was a couple weeks ago when I was starting up my charcoal BBQ.

I found with buying my first house (current house in WY) that the online listings were terribly unreliable. For instance, my own place stayed on Realtor for many months after it was sold. Several are just plain not listed in the first place, and despite the MLS system intended to work in a "Live" fashion, it still relies on human realtors to input everything.

The BEST source, hands down, is a local Realtor. They have access to LOCAL MLS (that's a paid service, I haven't been able to find access to this service anywhere except through a Realtor), plus they tend to do walk-throughs of all the homes as they come on the market. We got REALLY lucky when buying from out of town by finding someone who has shown himself to be so far above the rest I've delt with that it's a shame he switched careers.

My wife and I are in the process of selling currently, and we only look online at other areas. I can assure you we will never pick up a newspaper to look there. I wouldn't waste my money on that venue (either paying them for something or buying their drivel... might just be because the local paper is nothing but an opinion column of the editor, and I don't like his opinion.

Out of curiosity Brian, is your home listed online? Is it in town or out? I'm still looking in that area for a job though I'm not sure we'd be able to buy a home right away. If your house doesn't sell though, would you consider renting it?

If you want to DM me the name of the real estate agency you went through I'd appreciate it. (even if the guy that sold you your home is no longer there).

I think local newspapers are still an excellent resource when looking for real estate. Realtors have online web sites that give properties that are not being sold by an individual. An individual will list their property in a variety of ways but their local papers are an easy listing. Many people start out trying to sell their property themselves to save the realtor costs. Whenever we travel I pick up local property info. Several times I have not been able to locate the same properties online.
