To get a "taste" of the reality of living around here, look up the WYDOT website and your favorite weather mapping/forecast service sites.
You'll see what a very typical spring storm looks like ... we've got about 1/2 of the state shut down right now. The roads in SE Wy are CLOSED, with major routes such as I-25 and I-80 closed for substantial portions. Right now, you cannot get around in the Cheyenne area due to the ground blizzards and snowdrifts, and out in the county area, it's even more difficult. All of our cars are buried in drifts, our driveway is drifted in about 4-6' deep, and our 4020 tractor is buried in a drift, so I can't even get it going until I shovel it out to then work on getting the cars out.
Our livestock is all in barns or 3-sided shelters, so they're OK. It's not very cold, so that helps, but they do need access to food and water. It's quite a chore to ensure that that's happening.
I'll wait for the storm to abate, but I'm guessing now it will be Monday or Tuesday this week before we'll be able to get out of here, with the county roads not being cleared for awhile.
Oh, and through all of this, I just wore my usual jeans and sweatshirt, with a pair of Carhart insulated bib's, heavy insulated boots, gloves, and an old St James' Bay long coat (not especially heavy, but windproof), with my heavy wool knit cap. You can't see more than 20-30' in the ground blizzards, so the going is slow in the winds between the house and the barns.

I think its kinda funny when someone moving here(wyo) from another state says...oh wind, we can handle the wind we live in.... or something. When we talk about wind here we mean WIND not a breeze.
*chuckles*. Im not trying to cause trouble with this post

But their clothing leaves a lot to be desired for just being outdoors. I've got two superb ski parkas from them, but I wouldn't wear them to check on livestock or waterers ... they're simply too cold without layers of clothing on under them, which becomes way too bulky and a chore just to get ready to go outside for a quick check around the place.

Oh but that's where hot-flashes come in handy

Your post made me laugh - I grew up in Northeast Colorado, similar weather to Wyoming (or so I thought). When I moved her over 15 years ago, I commuted a frequently bad road to work. I always told my husband "I can handle it - I've driven in white-outs before," or "We had wind where I grew up - it was cold there too."
Although the weather where I grew up IS windy, cold with bad roads for Colorado, you are exactly right Wyogirl. The first day I came home visibily shaken after driving in a Wyoming white-out on a Wyoming road with Wyoming wind and cold, my husband politely just nodded his head and said "It's different, idn't it." No lecture, no I-told-you-so.

*LOL* Yup. My wife moved here from Medford, OR. (I call it a hole in the mountains.) I warned her that it was windy here, but she insisted she enjoyed the wind.
Thing is, she didn't know what wind was until she arrived in Gillette. She was thinking about that warm breeze she sometimes felt in August, while I was talking about those winter winds that try to blow away railroad tracks.

CNOSWORTHY,
We're stationed in Montgomery AL, right now, and are headed to Cheyenne in August. I'll let you know how that transition goes:-) We were stationed in Minot for 4 years, so I figure it can't get any worse....add wind, subtract 6 months of below zero. I figure at least the snow melts (or blows) away during the winter, so I will survive:-)
