Sheridan does not have a Meth problem like some people seem to think. I worked for the County for a while and very few people come in there for Meth Charges, either possesion, intent to deliver, or making it.
I've mentioned this before but it needs mentioned again. Drugs/violence/etc problems is all on how it is reported by each town. Some towns have a big tourist trade and get enough money's to maintain their law enforcement departments. To report "ALL" drug crimes to the state and nation would ruin the tourist trade. But some towns have no real means of gaining money's for their law enforcement department so they report "ALL" drug crimes. This allows them to apply for money from the state and the Fed Government to enhance thier departments.
So one town may have a heavy meth problem and it never gets reported Nationally. Another town may have basically no problem but it gets widely publisized.
Take a look at the Sheridan Press. All arrests are listed. All court appearances are listed. All calls by the police, fire, and sheriff's departments are listed. Seldom see meth or drug charges. Or if you do is pretty minor.
I've been in Sheridan off and on since 1972 and have never seen a problem.
By the way, the Sheridan Press is online and you can look at the front page every day for free. Can look up particular pages for free. Or you can subscribe online for a pretty resonable cost. I spent some time in the Military and subscribed to the Press for a year before I moved back here. Really gives you a feel for the community.

Hi, my wife, daughter and I live in MI. I lost my job and we want out of this state. My wife has been teaching fourth grade since she got here degree. We heard Wyoming was looking for people and has lots of jobs. Trying to decide where in Wyoming we should look. I am interested in knowing about the southwest part of the state. Any help would be great.

Joel, there are a lot of posts on this board that could help you in your search. If you are looking in the Rock Springs/ Kemmerer areas try searching those on here.
Additionally, you and your wife can check out the teaching jobs in Wyoming here:
Wyoming Job Vacancies
There are several listings for 4th grade teachers... but perhaps she would consider other elementary grades as that would broaden the search?
As an out-of-state teacher-to-be looking for employment in Wyoming as well, I've found this site also has some good information:
Becoming Licensed
Your wife would need to take the Wyoming constitution test to gain licensure, as well as a Praxis II test (if she hasn't already done so) in Elementary ed. There's a thread on the forum for Wyoming teachers you might want to check.
If you haven't had the opportunity to see/visit Wyoming I suggest you and your family do so. There are differences between the different areas, and you might find one more suitable to others for your needs. Housing is sometimes the hardest to come by in certain areas.
Good luck on your search!

Wyoming WAS looking for workers. Gillette/Campbell County has sent recruiters to Michigan job fairs in recent years with good results. Unfortunately, Wyoming is now suffering from job losses too. Because the state had such low unemployment rates, it still has lower unemployment than other states, but for Wyoming it's sky high. A year ago I'd have said, "COME ON DOWN!" You'd have found a good job within a few days. But the economy has changed. Employers are cutting hours and reducing payrolls. Oil is no longer $150/barrel. Natural gas prices have plummeted. Obama doesn't like coal. Tourism will likely be down this year.
Wyoming has a few jobs and a few more people wanting them. Be careful. If you're clean (drug tests, driving record) and can afford to spend a little time searching for work, you should find it, but it's not like it was a few years ago.

Hey Allison, google the Chamber of Commerce for each town and they'll send you information for free. I get it all the time and love it! It's as close as I can get to Wyoming for now until I can move there. Been there a couple times, going back this Fall for a trip, I can never get enough of it. Just take the proper steps getting to your goal and it will happen. Don't give up!

Welcome Wagon
Hi Allison!
I am happy to see you are interested in moving to Sheridan and feel confident you can make a place for yourself here. My family and I moved here from Denver about 5 years ago and have never felt more welcome in all the other places we've been!
I do know of a couple bartending jobs available and there are other jobs in the paper and the Wyoming Works website. Things are a bit lean right now, but the unemployment rate in Wyoming is lower than any other state.
I'm not sure our Welcome Wagon lady is still in business, but I'd be happy to help you acclimate to the community and find what you need to transition from the East Coast. As a former Chamber of Commerce employee, I have a pretty good knowledge-base for a newcomer- housing, employment, organizations, shopping, etc.
Did you make it out here again this June? (I saw in a prior post that you had planned a return visit.)
Let me know if you're still interested in moving and/or you'd like my email address and I will get that to you.
Best,
Kim

WyattE and KADETMER,
Thank you both I will take you both up on your advice & help! I actually just got a bartending job in NJ so I will have a years' worth of bar experience before heading out west. (that seems to be the biggest hurdle in getting a bar job-nobody wants to train...) I still have my goal relocation set for Aug 2010. I'm gong to pop out next june for 2-3 weeks to meet with realtors/ apartment hunt and get some resumes out. I am so excited at the thought of living in Sheridan! I feel like the "jersey way" is hollowing me out on the inside...Thank you again for your help and advice! Keeo it comin'!
