Red face Sheridan Welcome Wagon?

hello,
I visited Sheridan in June 2008 and fell in love! I have never felt at ease anywhere else in my life. I am 32 years old and am done! I have had enough of the crazy NJ lifestyle and need to get out and I cannot imagine somewhere nicer. I need to be where neighbors are not just people who happen to live next to you and if you acknowledge someone on the street you wont get punched or taken for a prostitute! Haha! I am determined to be there in August 2010. I know that sounds like a long ways of but I want to get to know people and save enough money so I never have to see that Garden State again (except to visit family). Can anyone give me any advice or information that might help? I'm planning on flying out next June to job hunt and find a place to live. I've been told Sheridan has a big Meth issue but I haven't found any facts to support that in my research. I appreciate any help you can give me! See you in June but hope to be talking to you soon!

Good luck on your plans to move! I've not visited Sheridan yet, but perhaps this summer.

Have you tried looking on the Wyoming job site : https://www.wyomingatwork.com/ ?

Also could you post here what type of job you are looking for? There might be someone who can give you a better idea of where to look that way.

I know what you're feeling. Visiting Lander WY once when I was a teen was enough to convince me too. Now I'm just trying to convince my hubby that he'd love it just as much as me

Best wishes, this board has a lot of friendly knowledgeable folks ready and willing to help give advice.

The website that Froggie Legs gave you is a good place to start as far as looking for jobs. We are feeling a bit of the economic crunch right now, so some of the better paying jobs are becoming scarce, like out in the methane fields, but there are still a few jobs available.

As far as a meth problem here in Sheridan, it's not as big as some may think. It only sounds big because the cops do a pretty good job staying on top of it. I've actually heard that Gillettte has a worse problem with meth than Sheridan and that people were making labs under cattle gaurds. I don't know how much of that is true because WY is known for embellishing things especially as it travels through the grape vine, or just coming up with things off the wall. I don't know how many times over the past 10 years I've heard that stores like Target and Shop-ko were coming into Sheridan and yet so far no ground has been broken to do so. I think that a lot of the made up stories is wishful thinking.

The best advice that I can give is, when you move to WY just come with a good attitude and be prepared to be a good neighbor. How people treat you depends on how you treat others. If you come here looking for trouble, you'll find it. If you come here wanting to make friends, you'll make friends. If you want your neighbors to like you, you have to be a neighbor to like. If you are willing to pitch in and help when someone needs it, others will pitch in and help you when you need it.

If you have any specific questions about Sheridan, just ask away and I'm sure that someone on here will do their best to answer them.

Wyom4me,
My late wife moved to Gillette from the Garden State. I think she thanked God every day for Wyoming. She couldn't get over the blue skies, all the stars visible at night, and seeing the moon at high noon.

Biggest problem? She was always walking into auto-open doors. You've gotta learn to move a little slower in Wyoming.

thank you all so much already!!!! I had a suspicion that the "meth issues" were just rumors and gossip taking into consideration I've read previous posts that say there is too much police presence! Ummm... if there are a lot of police than HOW is there a drug problem!? Hahaha! I am extremely excited to move slower, as I said I have had enough of the go go go go! I look forward to being able to enjoy life one moment at a time. As far as my expectations and personality attitude, I cannot wait to smile at my neighbor and have them smile back. I am a people person and need to be around people not cogs in a statewide machine. I look forward to anything else anyone can tell me! God bless!

Good luck on your possible move.

There are some layoffs and some people out of work, so the jobs are starting to seal up a bit in some fields... however I still see some jobs in the paper. Just depends on what line of work you are in.

Let us know if we can be of any more help answering your questions

I don't know if I would say we move slower per say around here, we just aren't always in such a big rush unless it's planting time or harvesting time or calfing/lambing season and selling time. But even then people will still take time to at least say hello and maybe visit for a spell.

When you go to the store for shopping, (especially after you have made a few friends) you might want to plan on doing it when you have a couple of hours to kill. I don't know how many times I went to the store to grab something quickly and should have been in and out in 10 mins. max only to have the 10 min. shopping trip turn into an hour or two. I always end up running into a few people I know and we end up visiting in the aisles for sometimes a half an hour or more.

Heck there is even a good chance you may end up having conversations with folks you don't know. I'm a big people person too and I'll talk to just about anyone about anything. I'm not the only one either that does this. A lot of folks around here are people persons and will gladly strike up a conversation with whomever is in an aisle with them.

I think you are really going to enjoy living in WY. We definately have a different mind set than other states. We are more relaxed and layed back around here. Life goes by to quickly and it is wrong not to enjoy it while you have it.

Oh yeah, and that popular morning beverage? It's pronounced caw-fee, and you order it black, with cream or with cream and sugar. "Regulah" isn't on the menu, but if it was, it would be black.

I cannot tell you how helpful this forum has been for me! As I said I visited WY in June w/ my bf at the time. Sadly he has succumed to a midlife crisis and has since left me (2 days before NY Eve! ugh!). Two weeks after he dumped me my father passed away VERY suddenly so it's like trauma on top of trauma for me out here! The one thing I can focus on is how right it felt to be out there and how amazing the people were. We actually didn't stay the whole time in Sheridan. We drove & camped out so we started in Devils Tower, then Sheridan, then Cody (the rodeo was AWESOME!! I actually bought a lasso!) then we stayed outside of Yellowstone, then back to Sheridan for about 3 whole days & nights before driving back to NJ. I loved it! love the pancake house, the mint bar, the loaf n jug, LOVE IT! I am currently an Assistant Store Manager for Barnes & Noble Booksellers. I have certifications for Administrative Assistant positions and my bartending certification. I am trying to find a bartending job out here for now so i can get some experience before I go out west. I actually enjoy barending and i know there are at least 4 bars in Sheridan alone. It's just very hard to keep the faith that it will happen. Lew (my ex-bf) lived in Sheridan for about 2 years so he knew people there, I don't know anyone. It's just very daunting, I know it's worth it no doubt! Thank you so much for reaching out to me and I look forward to any advice you can give me!
Allison

Hi wyom4me. I also need to get out of the northeast (Connecticut here) I need to leave this blue state and head for a red state. I need some wide open space withouth traffic, congestion, pollution, noise, hectic hustle and bustle, rudeness, etc. I've been looking at Sheridan for a little while and like what I see so far. I havent been out there yet but am planning to make a trip this summer for a look around. I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can particularly the year round climate in and around Sheridan. There's alot of good info on this forum and I hope this thread stays alive.

Anyone with good info for a couple of easterners please feel free to offer it up! lol
