Default Anyone have info on Sheridan WY? or Billings MT?

Hello,
My fiance (31), son (2), mother (54), and myself (30) want to move back to the mountains. We have narrowed it down to Sheridan WY and Billings MT. We got the chance to see Sheridan and loved it, but it may be out of our price range a bit. Heard Billings is cheaper, and (although bigger) just about as good. We just want a little land, trees, not too much wind, reasonable land prices, ... any info you have would help, you can only read so many facts before all the info runs together.
We would like to live right on the edge of town, or maybe even commute 30 mins or so.
Thanks

The advice you've been given is pretty good with a few tweeks here and there.

Sheridan has become real expensive where as Billings has gone up in prices but not nearly as bad as Sheridan.

Sheridan does have mountains. Billings does not.

Saturdays paper, here in Sheridan, advertised land about 9 miles from town. 35 acre tracts for around $135,000. Some of the tracts have ponds on them. But I'm sure those are a little higher. Some of the tracts are 50+ acres.

Although this area doesn't have water to it yet, the city is expanding in that direction and it won't be long before city water is available.

Not sure what prices you'd be looking at in Billings.

Look into roundup,mt about 50 miles north of billings. There is 'some 'somewhat reasonably priced land between roundup and billings in the 'bull mountains' [which arent very high as mountains go but you do have a lot of pine trees and the 'feel' of the mountains].There are also a lot of areas around there that used to have a lot of pine trees but they all burned down, but i guess thats a risk you will face in most areas of the west.I think sheridan is nicer but much smaller.Depending on what you do for a living billings 'may' provide more job options. For many jobs wages are often much better in wyoming, but that depends on the job, taxes are much better in wyoming.I like both areas,[and both states], a lot will depend on what you do for a living and how much money you can afford realestate wise.
