I'm so glad she was properly discouraged from moving to Centennial, no doubt the community will be better for it!

Haha- welcome to the west. You're lucky you didn't run into some oil roughnecks smacked out on meth!

As someone who isn't a Wyoming citizen (other than honorary) I've been to Centennial many times and our choice of lodging is the Old Corral. It's a bit touristy...but, hey...the rooms are clean, the food at the restaurant is good, and the only time I smelled what I believed to be pot was when the better half and I drove up to Libby Flats for star-gazing. The better half and I make a twice annual pilgrimage to Wyoming to recharge the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical batteries. I don't doubt that there is pot smoking going on in Centennial, and I am not in the least bit surprised that someone had drunk too much in (gasp) a bar. Get real.

I've never heard of anyone in a small town in Maine using alcohol or pot to excess .... must be an "out West" phenomenon limited to our state.

Amen, Sunsprit! Why would anyone base their impressions of an area on the local bar scene!

Maine Mom
At least the good people in Centennial have done their job and kept this woman OUT of our state. I agree, Utah might fit like a glove, but you're poor husband will die of boredom and your kids will end up in a cult

I would recommend Either Pinedale or Big Piney Wy. This is where we first moved to, but had to relocate due to our work for now. I spent my summers in Centennial while growing up but recently made the trip & had the same impression as you. It has grown, since I had been there last in 1991 & not for the better. These 2 places I recommend are in the Wind River & Grand Teton ranges & have terrific schools & churches. I hope you will visit them & find them as lovely as I have.

All other aside, Wyoming is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Depending on what your interests are, you are likely to find everything you are looking for. I often travel and go to the local pub as I find it interesting to people watch and meet new people. I won't join the others in critisizing your choice of entertainment and lodging as though I have never been to Centennial, I believe your choices were fairly limited! There are a lot of small communities in Wyoming that would probably work well for you and your family. Just know that it is different here, like no other place some say.

If you run into a roughneck smacked out on meth - he is probably out of work. The random drug tests on the rigs weed out the drug users. Walmart may have lowered their standards but the drilling companies can't afford to lower theirs.
I had great fun in Centennial - the green chili alone is worth the visit. The fishing in that area wasn't bad either. We had a couple of great conversations with "locals" at the bar. One old guy told me about a secret fishing spot were I could catch more fish then I could carry! OK, people in Wyoming may tell lies while they are drinking in bars also!!
