Wow! There should be a fine if you're caught driving with expired tags. It sounds like you did about the same thing my wife did. We forgot to buy new plates for her car until she was pulled over about 8 months past the due date. She couldn't believe that *I* had forgotten. I couldn't either. (I always buy the plates.) I went out to look at the tags. Sure enough, expired. I'm thinking her fine was around $250. There was no reduction for being old and forgetful.
