Things have obviously changed A LOT since Tigerstripe lived in Gillette!!!! Wow. I knew things had gotten better here, but it is now nothing like he/she describes, except maybe the weather, which isn't all that bad in my opinion. Prison before Gillette? That's harsh! Now that Gillette has close to 30K people I venture to say that there are many who disagree with Tigerstripe!

Gillette HAS changed a lot through the years. When I lived there (1972) the town was trailers, bars, and dirt (usually blowing sideways )

Gillette was booming, big time. We built the interstate and were working on the bridge over 59. We actually left town to drive out to the bridge. Gillette doubled or tripled in size in a couple of years. They were leveling trailer spaces as fast as they could. Streets were dirt, no lawns, if it rained it was mud city.

I lived in Sierra Trailer Court. We had no streets or lawns or sidewalks. Look at it now.

The people (residents, not transients like me) finally caught up with the growth spurt and planted trees, lawns, built streets, put in curb and gutter and finally got a handle on it.

Today it's a beautiful town and has enough people to sustain boom and bust. Back then there were few residents trying to make due with what they had and the growth that was thrown at them. They handled it well and really made something out of it.

I think Gillette is a pretty town. All of the street work and the beautiful flower beds all about town are great. The art pieces that are constructed along the major streets add a lot of character to the town. If a person hasn't been in Gillette in years they should definitely come back to see the changes. When I was growing up on the other side of the mountain I always thought "yuck" when I thought of Gillette. Now, so 30-40 years later, I think it's a wonderful place to live. Time has really changed Gillette.
