On Oct. 17, 1969, the 14 African- American players on Wyoming's then-undefeated football team walked into coach Lloyd Eaton's office wearing black armbands. The team was preparing to play BYU at War Memorial the next day. The players had a question. Could they wear black armbands in silent protest? The year before, in their victory at BYU, they said Cougars players taunted them with racial epithets. The Wyoming players had also learned that the Mormon Church, which BYU represents, did not allow African-Americans in the priesthood. But this was also Wyoming, 1969. coach Eaton, citing a policy against protests, a rule no player had heard of, said no. He then kicked all 14 off the team for the rest of the season. Only three would play for Wyoming again.

I just wanted to say that I have not given up on this thread, but my personal life has gotten busier now so I may not have time for awhile. Have fun and I hope to rejoin this game at a later date.

It's been a while since I lived anywhere near the Green river but I seem to remember some things from one of those Wyoming roadside signs between Green River and Kemmerer. I know it's indian name was the seedkadee (sp?) and I thought the spanish originally named it the Green River (but in spanish, that would probably be verde). How'd I do?

Welcome ImAHobbit!!.. You are partially right. The Shoshone referred to it as the Seeds-kee-dee-agie or the Prairie Hen River. And, yes, the Spanish or Mexicans referred to it as the Green River or Rio Verde! The Astorians called it the Spanish River prior to 1825.. Fathers Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante referred to it as the Rio de San Buenaventura river. I will accept youre answer, you were the first! You can ask the next question..

That is totally awesome! I lived in Wyoming most of my life, and didn't know half the things that you have asked about. I am not a HUGE feminist, just a BIG one and to know that my home state was the first to grant women the right to vote just blows my mind.

Thanks
