welding job in wyoming
i've done extensive research online with minimal opportunities being returned. How are the coal mines doing? Looking for steady work, i can weld mig/tig/stick/fluxcore and quickly learn anything else. I'm in ohio right now, if I set out on foot in wyoming, do you think it would take long to find something? the newspapers i've read online do not offer there jobs section but only a referall to hotjobs.. Thanks for any insight into the industry.

Have you tried here?
Might be something listed. Jobs are scarce.

that was the first place i tried. the only place i haven't looked is the local newspapers. the online version just turns you over to yahoo hotjobs.
i'm trying to get a "pulse" and see if it's a good time to come out and start knocking on doors.

Right now, in Sheridan, there are only spot jobs being listed. Jobs that might last a week or two at best. All of the long term jobs are filled except for jobs like Taco Johns, McDonalds and such.
Friend of mine hired onto a local place to weld. He worked about 2 weeks and then they cut his hours to a job here and there. About 15 hours a week.
Don't know about the rest of the state.

I've been using two temp day laborers for fencing and some other "chore" day work around my place here in SE Wyoming for the last month ... they've been sent out on jobs such as flagging traffic for road repairs, doing some painting on commercial buildings, and a bit of roofing repair work by Labor Ready.
Both are certified welders with years of experience in MIG, TIG, stick, and gas welding ... one has years of pipeline experience and the other even has aviation welding experience. Neither has been able to find a job welding in the region, and one has moved here from Casper where he last worked for an oilfield equipment company and got laid off from that.
I've been reading the Cheyenne Tribune-Eagle and The Casper Star Tribune, and the employment sections are rather slim pickin's these days. The T-E hasn't had a full page of help wanted ads in months, more commonly about 1/2 to 2/3 of a page. The Star Tribune hasn't had a page to much more than that in months, although it's got pages of real estate ads these days.
With the layoffs and slowdowns in the area, my bet is that the only way you'll get a job welding these days will be to contact potential employers directly about job openings. There may be a few jobs out there, but you'd better be careful that you can find housing at a price you can afford on the projected income ... and in a place that you'd want to live.

well these comments aren't very comforting.. i keep reading how mining production keeps going up and up every year so they must eventually need workers.. it's about 3 months away when i plan on coming out to scout around. i've got a near complete list of companies and contractors to start knocking on doors. are there any specific local spots where i might brush shoulders with these guys?
I certainly don't have all my eggs in one basket here but it's a place my wife and I would love to live and raise our kids. I'll won't live it down if I don't at least get out there and make an effort..

go to wyopress.org and click onto the members link. Many of the papers do show their classifieds,at least the cities most likely to have welding /mining jobs do.I look at the ads at least weekly in the gillette news-record and rocksprings rocket-miner.The other posters are pretty much on target though that in the past year help wanted ads have withered down to almost nothing.Where a year or so ago there were sometimes well over 100 ads there are now just a handful.I have still seen some fairly recent welder/mining related jobs in the gillette paper but nothing like a year or so ago.Two summers ago people in gillette were job hopping like crazy....now nobody is changing jobs...at least voluntarily. Most current jobs can likely be filled be locals,by word of mouth. If you go to gillette, rocksprings,or .....wamsutter you may be able to line something up.As noted above housing is still quite high.....and not always very attractive for the price.goodluck

Go to the above mentioned Wyoming at Work link. Today they listed a welding job at Rio Tinto coal mine! Good luck!
