I too love to fish out at Acme also, my husband daughter and I caught bass left and right out there. Two folks got really good sized ones when we were there .
I will say if you are used to "bigger" pan frying fish like bluegill, crappie, ect, they are quite a bit smaller here than down south. The bluegill down south get big enough to fillet for example hahahaha
But it is fun once you learn where to go fishing.
Welcome to Sheridan irmobaseball, it is a great town! No place is perfect, but darn close. A totally slower pace of life out here, small town feel. The country is very beautiful too. Good luck on your move and welcome to town! can't wait to see here how you have settled in

So how big do the Bass get in the Sheridan area. In the south they can get up to 7, 8, 9 lbs. I know no place is perfect but the beauty of the area sure is. The most important thing to me is that my kids grow up with other good kids. Boy, this week sure is going at a snails pace. I plan on leaving next saturday if all goes well. It is really scary when you don't have a place to live and your moving over 1,300 miles away and don't know a soul. We'll be living in a hotel for a few day until we find a rental. Sometimes in life you have to take a risk to get what you want. Thanks for the fishing information. Do they have any ponds in sheridan stocked with Bass. I plan on building a log cabin and pond one day and stocking it with Bass if they can take the cold weather.

The bass that have been biting lately are smaller. 10-12 inches. But bigger stuff has come out of Acme.
Nothing in Sheridan with Bass but Acme is only 8 miles or so North on the interstate.
There are two ponds in Sheridan, one is for kids only I believe, not sure. It's at the fair grounds. The other is Sam Mavarakis (sp?) on 8th street. Both are trout ponds.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the welcome you and your kids get. Kids will be well received.
Don't know if you'll find something suitable in just a few days. Might take longer. There are apartments available some times but houses are harder to come by. You might look at Ranchester, Dayton, Story areas. There's been more opening up there lately.

Well at this moment I am in a hotel in Hays, KS. I left this morning from Texas on my way to my new home in Sheridan, even though I don't have anywhere to live yet. I did reserve a cabin in Buffalo, at Deer Park, does anyone have any information on this campsite. I hope a rental comes up fairly quick. I can't believe this is happening. I called my brother in North Carolina while I was driving today and he can't believe it either but he agrees that if you can't be happy in Sheridan, you can't be happy anywhere. I should arrive tomorrow night, what a life changing experience and probably the best decision I have ever made. I'll post again tomorrow after I arrive, wish me luck.

You're running early. hahaha Not sure what kind of special they run now days but you might try the Trails End Motel in Sheridan. They used to have monthly rates that were pretty reasonable. Outstanding place with a restaurant on the premisis.
Deer park, although I've never stayed there, is a great stop off point. You should be happy with it. It's another 30+ miles to Sheridan but for most folks that's a normal commute.

Hey Irmobaseball, I'm envious! I hope you find a place for you and your family. Keep posting your transition, when you can find the time, I'm sure you will be busy. I didn't get the position at the VA so my dream is on hold....again, but I keep searching daily, waiting for an employer to take a chance on me, so one day I can call the Great State of Wyoming, my home.

I'm loving this thread....I'm also a teacher P.E. (and certified secondary social studies) here in Ohio and I'm looking at Wyoming for all the similar reasons. I have 4 children ages 10 and under. Looking at Sheridan, Lander, Gillette areas. All 3 seem quite different from what I can tell.
I'd like to hear more about the schools if you don't mind, Elkhunter. Feel free to send me a pm if you can.
BTW, what all do you fish for? I'm a bass, walleye, and pike guy mostly.

IMO the schools are outstanding in Sheridan. I was involved in curriculum developement and course writing for 20 years. When I got to Sheridan and put my 5 kids in various schools, I was tickled to death with the schools and the teachers.
Lot's of bass out at Acme, trout just about everywhere else. Not sure what's in Desmit, all I ever caught there was trout.

Hi there again!
A lot of people fish out at Keyhole, which isn't that far from Gillette (28 mi. on the interstate, then off on a side road for a ways), which I believe has the walleye and pike you are looking for. My ex-bf used to go there a lot to fish, one of his favorites and he's a big pike guy, with walleye coming in 2nd. Sure hope you end up in this area! Take care.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to post earlier. I have been very busy. I arrived in Sheridan Sunday night. I'll tell you one thing the road from Cheyenne to Sheridan on I-25 was brutal, the hills were definitely hard on my vehicles. My wife pulled one trailer while I pulled the other with two Silverado's. As difficult as I-25 was I wouldn't leave Sheridan the rest of my life. I had a one night reservation at the Trails End Motel and the lady that was working that night was very nice and even upgraded our room and gave us free coupons for breakfast that was very good. The last few days have been spent trying to find a home for rent and today I finally found one for $950. It's a two bedroom with a big basement in the Meadowlark Elementary area, I'm not sure what the name of the neighborhood is but the houses are pretty nice. Sheridan is everything that I expected it to be. The people here are the nicest I have ever met. I had to open up a checking account today at the Sheridan Community Bank and had some issues getting my money transferred. The lady that I worked with could have blown me off if she wanted but she did everything possibly to solve our issues. People here are very different they treat you like family and I haven't run into anyone with an attitude. I'm sure most of you that live outside of Sheridan know what I'm talking about. Everyone and I mean everyone is nice. If you are considering Sheridan as a place to call home, I guarantee you that it will be the right decision. Everyone seems to be the same here, what I mean is they all get along well because they believe in the same things. The only negative that I see is that in some neighborhoods the houses are very close to one another. I assumed that with so few of people living in Wy they would be more spread out. I guess if everyone gets along as well as they do you wouldn't mind living close to your neighbors and I'm sure that the snow is also a good reason. Oh yea, when I arrived at the hotel in Sheridan I got out of my truck and heard a hissing sound, it was my trailer tire, better it happened pulling into the hotel in Sheridan than somewhere on i-25. Luckily their was a tire repair shop a block down the road. I can't believe how many stores are in Sheridan for a place with 16,000 people.
As I stated earlier, I chose Sheridan because I wanted my kids to grow up in a community with wonderful people that had values and were just great people. I know I haven't been here for long but you can tell pretty quickly what people are like and Sheridan is everything I expected. I truely believe that nothing like this place exist outside of WY. Their may be other place like it in WY but you will be hard pressed to find it anywhere else.
The HR Specialist from the VA even called me yesterday to make sure my trip went well and invited me to the Sheridan County Fair this week. Oh yea, I went to the Sheridan VA the other day to find out where the VA was so that I can find my way to work on Monday and WOW! I could clearly see the Big Horn Mountains from the VA, what more could a person ask for. The title of this thread was Moving to Heaven and I couldn't have used a more appropriate title. I'll keep in touch and if you want to ask me any questions feel free.
