Question Camping near Dubois

Does anyone know of any good campsites near Dubois? We'd rather avoid the KOA. We're looking for something a bit more isolated and less cookie-cutter.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure from your post if you're RV'ing, car camping, motorcycle camping, horseback camping, or want to pack in to a wilderness area ....

Given the millions of acres of Nat'l Forest and Wilderness lands upon the doorstep of Dubois, your choices are phenominal. I can't imagine how a KOA there survives except for those who are too lazy to get out of their RV for more than a few steps ...

You are right between the lands of the Shoshone National Forest/Wilderness, and the Bridger-Teton ranges at Dubois, and ... of course, not too far out of Yellowstone. There are trailheads into the forest lands that start as close as 3.5 miles from Dubois, and many in the 10-15-20-25 -30 mile distance from town. You'll be heading into some "isolated" and "remote" country, for sure. Some trails are accessible by car, some only by a 4x4 off-road equipped vehicle, some only by horse or hiking in.

Be advised that this is active bear country, and the "bear proof" food storage/attractants regulations are now in effect. Best to contact the National Forest folks to find out what's required ... the Wind River Ranger District is based in Dubois, and they can help you. Or visit some of the websites ...www.fs.fedus/r2/shoshone/ ... for example. There's also some other private fee based camping areas around Dubois, you can google for camping in the area and come up with their sites.

what Sunsprit said... both black and grizzly country Either hardsided campers or bear safe camping ... food storage , food cooking away from camp and changing clothes after cooking and eating.

We're looking to drive in, and I've got a normal car, so probably nothing too arduous to get to.

Contact the Wind River Nat'l forest folks per my original post, they can tell you about the camping areas that you can access.

While the Wind River Range is huge there are really only a few access points.

When I lived in Jackson to get away from all the tourists we camped in the Torrey Lake area which is about 15 miles south of Dubois. It's about a 5 miles drive in and there is a NF campground and several great hiking trails heading into the Winds. Whiskey Mountain is an easy hike and is know for one of the largest herds of Bighorn Sheep and where hangliders set long distance records from the top of the peak.

Not known for much griz activity in this area.

I'll go ahead and recommend Double Cabin. It's roughly 15 miles outside of Dubois (from 'downtown' Dubois), there's an established USFS campsite there and you'd have no issue getting there in a car. Nice campsite w/ pit toilets, fishing, hiking, and great views.
