Default Sundance, Wy

Hi all!

I am 21 yrs old and recently graduated college. I recieved a job offer in Sundance and I am thinking about taking it, however I know nothing about the area. I will be new to the scene and was wondering what there is to do, if anything, for a young 21 year old... would I have to drive far to go have a decent time and meet new people?

Thanks

Stefanie

Default Sundance

Having lived in Wyoming almost my entire life my first visit to Sundance came just last year. It is a wonderful place to visit and provides a nice jumping off spot for Devil's Tower National Monument and the Black Hills.

As of July 2005, the town's population was 1,184. (It hasn't changed much since then.) The entire county, Crook County of which Sundance is the county seat, has a population of 6,182 (Department of A&I - July 2005 Estimate) spread across several small communities.

It a great place for getting outside and away from it all. There are many wilderness areas nearby and the area is popular for hunting and fishing. You could definitely have a good time in Sundance, especially during the annual Sturgis, South Dakota Bike Rally since many of the bikers pass through Sundance on their way to and from South Dakota.

Once you get to know everyone in the town, which should only take a couple of weeks, it will be west to Gillette (63 miles away) or east to South Dakota for new faces. Rapid City (76 miles) is the closet major city. At 60,000 or so strong and higher education facilities you should have no trouble meeting folks your own age.

Keep in mind, winters in northeast Wyoming (like most of Wyoming) are not gentle. The average high in January is 31, but with lots of snow. This could mean trouble for interstate travel. There may be a couple of weekends you will have to stay home. This could be a problem if you love to get out.

If you have the opportunity, visit Sundance before relocating. This should give you a nice chance to scope out the feel of the place.

Overall, Sundace is great for the outdoors, great for people who want a small circle of friends, great for those who like a small town and do not mind driving to bigger cities. Not so great if you regularly like going out on the weekends.

A lot depends on your background and interests, If you expect to find a fast-paced urban lifestyle, complete with restaurants, malls, nightclubs and entertainment, you're going to be very disappointed. On the other hand, if you are a church-going country gal who loves the wide-open spaces and the great outdoors, Sundance could be a dream come true.

Remember, Crook County has nearly 3 times as much land area as the state of Rhode Island, but only has about 6,000 residents. It's hard for most big-city types to envision an area that sparsely populated. I strongly suggest that you do a lot of research on-line (the town has a web site and the US Census Bureau can provide you with the demographics of the community) and visit in person if you can.

NewWy is an unknown quantity at this point
I would like to agree with what is said here. Sundance is one of the prettiest towns in Wyoming, but it reminds most people of a retirement home. This of course depends on what you like to do... As someone who likes to keep to herself most of the time, I find places like this ideal, but for someone who is into clubbing this wouldn't be some place they would feel happy.
