tell me about torrington
Hi. Well heres our story. My husband and daughter and i just got home from a week long visit to wyoming. we have family in pinehaven, 4 corners, and gillette area. My husband has been waiting to here from the mines for quite a while so we thought we would probably be moving to the gillette area. while we wrer there this past week he had a n on the spot interview at the honor camp in new castle. they said if anything happens possibly torrington so all this explanation for the simple question- what is torrington like? anything you know about it would be helpful. We have a 4 yr old girl, 2 dogs, we r in our early 30's. so any info would be good. Thanks so much.

My family and I moved here 7 years ago, so I'll try to give an objective viewpoint. Torrington has around 6,000 residents, w/nearly 12,000 in the county. It is a small community with agriculture as its historical economic base; many farms and ranches in the county. We have a high-quality 2-yr college - EWC. Shopping is limited, but I've heard businesses are slated to open when prison does. We have fast food - Taco Johns, Burger King - and other eating places, nice and some less nice. We always find somewhere to eat out when we want to. We have a Pamida, a store like a very small KMart, Alco, etc. but I shop there only in emergencies. Scottsbluff, NE is only 35 mi away with lots of great shopping, like super Walmart, Target, KMart, a shopping mall, bookstores, specialty stores, etc. I probably trek there twice a month.
Our schools are small but good. When I moved here, the residents were very friendly to me, but I did find it difficult to "hone out" a place for me within social groups 'cuz everyone here already had their social groups in place. That has changed in the last 2 years. Now there are many like us from elsewhere and the openness is refreshing.
There are churches, drs, dentists, eye drs., recreation opportunities (many lakes and mts are <60 mi away). Don't know where you are coming from. The weather here is mild compared to other WY locations, but if you are from AZ, AZ, TX, etc. you might find weather challenging.
I've met others who just moved here to work at prison and seem like wonderful people. Hubby's job at prison would definitely be dependable in this slow economy. DM if you have specific questions. I love my life here - cost of living relatively low, laid-back attitude, minimal traffic, people know me in the bank, stores, etc. yet close to CO front-range (2 hrs) shopping (30 min) Black Hills of SD (2.5 hrs).

I'm one of the new Corrections Officers for the Prison. There are plenty of houses for sale in Torrington, but the rental market is pretty crappy. I ended up renting a nice apartment in Lingle, roughly 10mi from Torrington proper, but that's OK... I like small towns.
The prison "officially" opens in mid January, so I would expect to start seeing new businesses/construction in the spring.

I am considering a position in Torrington. Do you know of any rentals within a 15 mile radius that will allow a small dog?

I am currently looking for a rental within 15 or so miles of Torrington that will allow a small dog. Any ideas? Thanks!

As others have posted, rentals in Torrington are scarce, and very few landlords are willing to take animals, especially when there is a long list of would-be renters.
However, I noticed a poster for the new apts over on P street that said "pets negotiable", which I assume means they'd accept a small pet.
The apts are new, and look nice from the outside. I hear the rent is about $750 per month, but that's just word of mouth.
I don't know who the landlord is, but there's a Cheyenne phone number-- 307-638-1444.
Hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay in posting.
Yes, the apartments on P accept pets on approval (medium/small dogs &/or cats) and are $750/mo.
Floors are NOT carpeted. They are tile & wood laminate. I think they are about 850 sqft. They looked nice when I wandered around them, but would not fit my lifestyle (I needed a basement/workshop).
dmsimp: Yes(?) I have not worked for WDOC before though, and am undergoing training for WMCI up in Guernsey (thus my delay in posting).
