Guys, aren't we heading to some pretty serious off-road equipment mentioned rather than the OP's intent to just explore "back roads"? When we're splitting hairs about EFI vs carb'ed vehicles on the trails, or changing axles to better performing/sturdier off road capability ... we're going far beyond the realm of a reasonable ground clearance with good capability AWD vehicle such as a subie forester or similar vehicle.

I've got no issue with your serious off-roading equipment when it's needed, but most of it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to expense, fuel economy, and road comfort when all that is needed is the ability to be on dirt roads, not trails or off road.
