I grew up in Sheridan at the VA in the '60s. We would go up to a friends's cabin in the Bighorns and pick the perfect tree, the best we 6 kids could agree on, that is. The VA Fire Dept. wouldn't allow trees up until a week before Christmas so we were always jealous of our town friends having trees up way before us. We had a caroling night with the VA families and I remember trudging through the snow and stopping at every house and to the patient's wards to sing. We ended up at the director's house for hot chocolate and cookies and the parents indulged in some other beverage.

My dad grew up in Minnesota so of course we had to have an ice skating rink. He got the VA to fashion a large rink in the pasture, complete with a flood light and a firehose from a hydrant to provide water. He was responsible for flooding the rink and keeping it smooth, sometimes a real challenge with Chinook winds melting and causing ripples in the ice. The kids were responsible for shoveling off the snow. We also had a bench and a little coal stove for warming our feet. It was so magical to skate at night with the moonlight glittering off the Bighorns and then walking home to a Christmas tree and a fire in the fireplace. Good memories!

What wonderful memories....right off the front of a Christmas card! It's amazing how different things are now compared to when we grew up, and it really wasn't that long ago! Technology is a great thing, but it has taken away so much from wonderful memory-making activities. People need to really make a point to make those memories happen with their families now, and it's darn difficult! Merry Christmas to all!
